On July 30th, people all around the world come together to celebrate International Friendship Dayโa day recognized by the United Nations. This special day is dedicated to promoting the idea that friendships between individuals, communities, countries, and cultures can inspire peace and create connections that bridge gaps across our global society.
The history of Friendship Day can be traced back to the early 20th century when Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards, first proposed the idea of dedicating a day to celebrate friends in 1930. What initially started as a way to promote the exchange of greeting cards quickly evolved into a global celebration of friendship.
In 1958, Dr Ramon Artemio Bracho, a Paraguayan, furthered the idea by proposing the establishment of World Friendship Day during a dinner with friends. This proposal ultimately led to the creation of the World Friendship Crusadeโan organization dedicated to promoting friendship and understanding among people from diverse backgrounds.
The theme for International Friendship Day 2024 is "Embracing Diversity, Fostering Unity." This powerful theme highlights the importance of acknowledging and appreciating the rich array of backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives that our friends bring into our lives. It encourages us to build bridges of understanding and unity while celebrating the beautiful tapestry of human connections.
