🚀 Unsolicited Advice for Aspiring Virtual Assistants (VAs) 🚀
(Based on my own journey. Some points are serious, some lighthearted. But hey, if your path looks different—own it! The beauty of freelancing is that there's no one "right way" to succeed.)
1. Don’t quit your job too soon.
I get it. You’re ready to be your own boss, but here’s the truth: freelancing is unpredictable at first. Even if your regular job isn't your dream job, keep it while you're starting out. It covers your bills and gives you security. When you’re ready to jump, you'll know—but don’t leap without a safety net. 💼
2. Find your niche.
The first step to success? Knowing where you fit. Not all VAs are the same! Medical VAs are in high demand, but if you're coming from a different industry, that’s okay too. Start where you are. If you have healthcare experience, you’ve already got a head start! If not, think about the skills you can transfer—organizational skills, customer service, or tech proficiency. Find your lane!
3. Master your niche.
Once you’ve chosen your niche, dive deep. Watch tutorials, read blogs, and learn as much as you can.
• Medical VA? Get familiar with EHR/EMR software, HIPAA compliance, and medical terminology.
• If you’re coming from another field, focus on tools that match your niche (project management tools, communication software, etc.). You don’t need to be an expert right away, but the more you know, the more confidence you’ll have. 💻
4. Build a standout resume and portfolio.
Start creating your virtual assistant resume and portfolio while you're learning. Keep it clean, but make it shine.
• Showcase your skills, experience, and certifications.
• If you’ve completed online courses, include those!
• For Medical VAs, highlight any relevant healthcare knowledge and certifications—this makes you more marketable. 💡
Pro tip: Use Canva or other free tools to create visually appealing resumes and portfolios.
5. Optimize your profiles.
Create profiles on platforms like Upwork, OnlineJobs.ph, and Freelancer. This is where you sell your skills, so make sure it’s polished.
• Add your resume and portfolio.
• Use a professional photo. (Yes, it matters!)
• Fill out all sections with care. A solid profile is like your online business card.
• Craft a bio that showcases your expertise and value—especially if you’re a Medical VA who can help with patient care, billing, or admin support.
6. Start applying.
Don’t be afraid to send that first application! Every successful VA has been where you are.
• Personalize your cover letter—show them why you’re the best fit.
• Even if you feel unsure, apply anyway. You won’t learn unless you try.
And remember, the interview process is a chance for you to shine. Prepare, practice, and keep learning. 🌟
7. Keep going, no matter what.
Building a VA career takes time, and it’s okay if it feels slow at first. The key is consistency.
• Medical VAs, if you’re passionate about healthcare and patient support, don’t give up.
• Remember, success isn't just about earning big money—it’s about doing work you enjoy and learning along the way. Some VAs thrive in part-time gigs, and others are burning the midnight oil at full-time rates. Whatever path you choose, make it work for YOU.
