OFFICIAL STATEMENT | On the Reported Chemical Spill Incident Following the Earthquake
San Pedro College assures the public especially our students, parents, personnel, and partner agencies that the chemical spill incident reported in one of our laboratory rooms at the Main Campus has been effectively and safely managed.
Immediately after the magnitude 7.4 earthquake, our laboratory staff, disaster response team, and security personnel acted swiftly and in close coordination. Upon confirmation of the spill, the affected area was promptly secured and cordoned off, and ventilation measures were implemented by opening windows and doors to dissipate any possible harmful gases.
With careful consideration of safety protocols and institutional capacity, the College sought the assistance of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)โthe appropriate agency equipped with specialized gear, equipment, and expertise to handle such incidents. The BFP team arrived at approximately 1:00 PM, conducted its assessment, and by 4:00 PM, the toxic materials had been contained and the area thoroughly cleaned and neutralized using proper absorbent materials. The BFP team concluded their on-site operations and final briefing by 5:30 PM.
San Pedro College extends its sincere appreciation to the BFP Davao team for their swift response and to our personnel who demonstrated calm, competence, and commitment throughout the incident. Following the cleanup and containment procedures, the laboratory was declared clean and safe from hazardous and poisonous contamination.
To our knowledge, the incident report and accompanying photos submitted by the BFP Davao team to their National Office formed part of their standard reporting protocol. The subsequent social media release from the National Office was not intended to sensationalize the event. We emphasize that the situation was handled with utmost prudence, professionalism, and adherence to safety standards, and that no one was harmed or placed in danger.
As we continue to assess and ensure the structural integrity of all our buildings and facilities, we assure everyone that the safety and well-being of our students and personnel remain our top priority.
