She was born on Dec.4, 2019 at 4:30 am, one of the happiest days of our lives. Every day was a happy day for us, until one day everything turned to misery. After a couple of weeks, we noticed a slight yellowing discoloration on Jazz's eyes. So we thought that she needed a little shed of sunlight to lessen her discoloration, but as days went by, her skin color changed and turned yellow, and these were the times we sought medical help from our Pediatrician.
Jazz is a December baby, a month filled with so much joy, excitement, and happiness surrounding the community for it is a holiday season. This is also the month that tore our hearts open. The lab results for our daughter is not what we expected. Her liver enzymes were too high as well as her bilirubin levels that indicate liver problems. Our pediatrician recommends us to seek a gastro specialist doctor for further assessment.
Then we have met our specialist doctor on Jan. 1, 2020, new Year day! A new year of heartache, a new year of pain given the thought that our daughter is sick. Several laboratory tests were made. I just can't bear to see my child screamed and cried because multiple needles had been inserted on her tiny arms almost every day at a very young age. 2nd week of January, clinically based on our doctor's diagnosis saying that Jazz has a liver disease called BILIARY ATRESIA and the only way to cure this deadly disease is LIVER TRANSPLANT.
Hearing these two words suddenly changed our lives. Biliary atresia is a condition in infants wherein the bile ducts outside and inside the liver are scarred and blocked. Bile can't flow into the intestine, so bile builds up in the liver and damages it. The damage leads to scarring, loss of liver tissue and function, and the worst liver cirrhosis.
We were appraised to have a KASAI PROCEDURE since it is very crucial at that time because we are reaching the age when Kasai needs to be performed right away. This will help only to delay the scarring of the liver and might give us a chance of delaying the time of LIVER TRANSPLANT. She's been a strong young fighter since she was diagnosed with a rare and deadly disease not known to everyone called Biliary Atresia at the age of 6 weeks. We managed to get the operation done in 2 months at VICENTE SOTTO MEDICAL CENTER where I worked as a Nurse. I cannot repay the hard work and effort made by our Pediatric surgeon and her team, and the nurses to have our child's operation done. Despite our financial problems and with the help of GOD everything turned well.
We stayed in the hospital for almost 2 months, every day and every minute is so scary but thank GOD we survived. After discharge we need to monitor our baby for possible complications of the operation, she's been taking loads of medications, vitamins, and antibacterial up until now and our baby is turning 7 months old this 4th of July. We had her monthly follow up laboratory tests just last few weeks and based on the latest lab test results everything falls apart. The liver enzyme kept on increasing as well as the bilirubin levels, which indicated that the Kasai Procedure failed. the doctor said she needed a LIVER TRANSPLANT.
Her specialist suggested having the transplant as quickly as possible and it would be best if we can do it this year before she reaches 1 year old. Like any other parent would have had their hearts broken hearing this. Yes, we're BROKEN but we're not LOSING HOPE. We only wish to be a happy family like everyone does. We are doing our best to get around this, but TIME is not on our side. We can only beat this with YOUR HELP.
Liver transplants in the Philippines cost 4 to 5 million but we joined a group that suggested cheaper and advanced technology in India that costs P1.5- 2 million for the liver transplant operation.
We humbly ASK FOR YOUR HELP to give us a chance to SAVE our daughter's life. And please include us in your prayer as well.
Help us SHARE THIS POST for everybody's awareness that this disease really exists to those not so lucky people like us.
Treasure your loved ones, your family and friends, and yourselves living a life with no serious health issues, Because your health is what we wish for our daughter to have. Hope you always be healthy not just in a physical sense but also with your soul. God bless us all, Thank you.
