For the purpose of this study, USANA narrowed the focus to vitamins that are often insufficient in average diets. This includes vitamins A, C, D, E, and K, plus some B vitamins—B6, B12, and folate.
Participants fasted for 12 hours and blood was drawn to set baseline levels before the study began. Then fasted blood samples were drawn again at the end of the four weeks. There were significant increases in blood levels of seven of the eight vitamins:
Vitamin B6—plays important roles in energy metabolism and maintaining healthy homocysteine levels (an amino acid—more on this below)*.
Vitamin B12—supports energy, nerves, healthy blood cells, and DNA synthesis; also plays a role in folate metabolism.*
Folate (vitamin B9)—helps make genetic material and DNA and supports healthy cell growth and function; critical for women of childbearing age to support a baby’s healthy neural tube development in the earliest days of pregnancy.*
Vitamin C—provides antioxidant defense and is important for immunity, production of collagen (and other compounds), and use of iron in the body.*
Vitamin D—supports cell health, strong bones, immunity, and nerve and muscle function.*
Vitamin E—provides antioxidant defense and supports cognitive health as well as liver and immune function.*
Vitamin K—aids blood clotting along with bone, cardiovascular, liver, muscle, and cartilage health.*
