During a dental visit, a visual examination alone may not tell the dentist everything they need to know. Should you have any symptoms or abnormalities in your teeth, a radiograph (also known as an X-ray image) is necessary in order to establish the correct diagnosis and subsequently the correct treatment to be rendered. Even in a routine check-up where the patient has had no complaints, X-rays can help to detect any developing decay or pathology that would have been missed visually, and early intervention can be performed before the problem worsens.

Anterior teeth typically have one canal. On the before root canal x-ray, you can see the condition of the tooth when the patient presented to the office. The reason for needing a root canal is often a recurrent decay that is too close to the nerve and/or the infection at the root of the tooth, called apex, the darker area surrounding the root, as seen on the before x-ray. After x-ray show beautifully completed root canal treatment.

A periapical x-ray is one that captures the whole tooth. It shows everything from the crown (chewing surface) to the root (below the gum line). Each periapical x-ray shows a small section of your upper or lower teeth. These x-rays are often used to detect any unusual changes in the root and surrounding bone structures.

Single tooth implants act to replace the entire tooth structure, rather than just a crown or a visible portion of the tooth.

Dental implant. This is a titanium screw-like post that is surgically placed in your jawbone. A dental implant acts to replace a natural tooth root and serve as an anchor to the tooth crown.
Crown. An implant-retained crown is a custom restoration that mimics the missing tooth in both function and aesthetics.
Abutment. This is a tiny connector that attaches the crown to the dental implant. Abutments are crucial to ensure a stable foundation for your new tooth.

X-ray imaging, also known as radiography, helps medical professionals see inside the body without having to make an incision. Dental x-rays help dentists see what is happening to parts of the mouth that he or she cannot visualize with the naked eye or with the help of dental tools.

The images dental x-rays create help dentists detect abnormalities and diagnose problems, such as cavities and root abscesses.

Panoramic X-rays show the entire mouth in one image. In them, we can see incoming adult teeth and wisdom teeth, including impacted ones, which is how we can determine whether there is enough room for them and if they’ll come in without any extra help. This type of X-ray also makes it easier to detect abscesses, tumors, and cysts.

It may seem odd that your dentist requires x-rays of your teeth to be taken every so often since most dental concerns are at a surface level. Yet there are several issues that your dentist cannot see without the use of an x-ray.

Why Dentists Take X-rays

To find cavities and tooth decay – While decay can become apparent on the surface of the tooth, it can be difficult to tell the extent of the damage by examining the surface of the tooth alone. Since decay shows up on an x-ray, they are useful in finding which teeth have cavities, the amount of decay, and how far into the tooth it has gone. X-rays can help a dentist determine whether a patient simply needs a filling, or has to have a root canal.

Reveal bone loss – Severe gum disease, or periodontal disease, can cause the jaw bone to begin to deteriorate. It is almost impossible for your dentist to tell that the bone is deteriorating, or the amount that already has, without the use of an x-ray. With digital x-rays your dentist will be able to find out where most of the bone loss is happening so they can treat it properly.

Periapical X-rays
periapical xrayPeriapical x-rays are one of the most recommended and used x-rays in the field of dentistry. They are the basics in the field of dental radiographs and are used to a great extent in several branches of dentistry in order to ensure that the procedures are done well and the teeth are not harmed in any form. Periapical x-rays are very easy to shoot in the radiograph room and can be processed easily in the dark room thereafter. This ensures that there is a lot saving of time on daily basis for the dentists and the dental teams. Even the patients are in great comfort due to less time utilization for the radiographic procedure. Patient co-operation is achieved easily during the process of shooting periapical x-rays. Both the children as well as adult patients can get their periapical x-rays done.

Before extraction, your dentist will take x-ray images of your mouth. With these images, your doctor can examine the position of your tooth and determine how he can best remove it with minimal impact to your jaw.

To ensure your comfort throughout treatment, your practitioner will numb your gums and the surrounding tissue. Next, he will gently loosen your tooth before removing it. If your tooth is particularly hard to remove, or if it is coming in at angle, your dentist may need to make an incision in the gum, remove bone tissue, or extract it in several pieces. This approach is more common during wisdom tooth removal. Even in cases of hard-to-remove teeth, however, our extractions will involve minimal discomfort and a speedy recovery.
