Latest reporting from the CDC shows this year’s flu season is the deadliest non-pandemic flu season for U.S. children. 216 children have died. This number passed last year’s flu season, which set a previous high for a non-pandemic season with 207 pediatric deaths. Even with seasonal flu activity declining since its February peak, AAP and CDC recommend everyone six months and older get vaccinated against the flu. New CDC report shows 9 out of 68 children (13%) reported to have died from flu this season had influenza-associated encephalopathy (IAE), a rare condition where the influenza virus causes swelling and damage in the brain.
