Special Needs Dentistry…. Treating more than the teeth, taking care of our patients and their families.

N was a charming 22 year old with Down’s Syndrome & the mental age of a 1 year old. He never spoke, was wholly dependent on his family for his every need, & despite everybody’s best efforts, refused to have anyone touch his mouth or brush his teeth. So he began to have severe bouts of infections, more frequently within the last 2 years. Luckily his very devoted Ate was able to reach out, all the way from Dipolog and we were able to plan his treatments & do his clearances remotely. Because of his condition, we decided on a full mouth extraction under general anesthesia, which was done today! 27 teeth, 3 impacted Wisdom teeth included, alveoloplasty to ensure no sharp edges of bone remain to hurt post op, And the use of Platelet Rich Fibrin to optimize healing and minimize pain & bleeding, all done in 2 hours and 4 minutes!

Endlessly grateful for the compassionate care of Dr. Shannon Bradley Co who ensured his safe, painless treatment, Drs. Marlito Paler & Angelyn Perez who were instrumental in today’s surgery, and the amazing team of the DMSF operating room for their kind accommodation and assistance. Sa uulitin, Sir Gogo.

Yesterday, we had the privilege of helping some of our colleagues who had an unfortunate incident in their clinic. What was thought to be a simple dental extraction led to what we call an Oroantral Fistula (or an abnormal connection between the Maxillary sinus and the oral cavity) .

At the time of the extraction, this was not noted, and unfortunately, pre operative radiographs were not taken…… 3 weeks post extraction, patient noted fluid coming out of his nose, then a foul odor, and when he finally made his way to my clinic, a CT Scan showed sinus infection. The CT Scan also showed that the maxillary ostium was blocked, so natural drainage was not possible…

So, to treat our patient, we needed our ever reliable ENT consultant to do a FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) to widen the blocked ostium , clean up the infection from that end, whilst afterwards, we were able to close the OAF by rotating tissues to ensure passive, watertight closure!

Glad to hear that our patient is on the mend, with no more draining fluids and discomfort. Grateful for the trust of our referring clinics and the confidence of our patient.

Another day, another baby !!!

Little K was a verrrry energetic little one who was referred to us for management of his lip ties. However, upon our initial evaluation, we noted a class 2 tongue tie ( as well as the very obvious Class 4 lip adhesions of the upper lip) . Then Mommy shared that he had very bad episodes of colic, gas, throwing up aside from NEVER being able to latch.

Since we did not want to wrestle with this kiddo ( a very large and strong 4 months old) and it was dangerous for him to flail around during surgery, we asked our ever helpful Pediatric Anesthesiologist Dr.Joash Lim to mildly sedate K so we could carry out the procedure quickly & safely, with minimal trauma to the little one!

Daddy remarked how K was now able to stick his tongue out, which he never did before, and Mommy commented how he was able to drink his milk quickly without frequent gagging or spit ups…

Looking forward to this little boy’s healing 🙂 Maraming salamat sa tiwala !!!

Another day, another baby!!!

Meet our super brave little E, our “record holding” little one released today at 2 days old!!! He was born yesterday at 2 am & his Mom had to endure painful latching as he could not fully engage the breast and nurse well. Luckily his beloved Tita was an alumni of our training program and reached out to me around 6 hour later… but since I was on route to Koronadal City for a lecture, we scheduled his procedure earlier today… Very happy that immediately after his super quick release (less than 1 minute per site with the CO2 laser) , he was able to latch & Mama reported ZERO pain!!!

Endlessly grateful for the trust of my referring doctors & patients! Maraming salamat po sa tiwala …

Over a year ago, a lady made her way to the clinic and asked us to help her daughter. “A” was an OFW who had a tumor removed years back in Northern Mindanao, but which grew back more destructive & bigger than ever. Since she was based in the Middle East, instead of her coming back to Davao, we decided to plan her surgery in the Delos Santos Medical Center, and with the superb team up of fellow OMS Drs. Jay and Jel de Ocampo, Microvascular HNS surgeon Dr. Chie Nieves & Dr. Michaelsam Econ. Tumor (an ameloblastoma) was resected with a sizeable portion of her mandible and immediately reonstructed with a graft from her lower leg. Then this January she flew back for dental implants, and this week she is back for fixed prosthetics to fully rehabilitate her lower jaw!!!!

So so grateful for the opportunity to help and make a difference!

Maeaming salamat sa tiwala 💜
