The Southern Philippines Medical Center - Cancer Diagnostic Institute — home to Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT, and Cyclotron facilities — officially opened its doors to the public in November 2025. At present, general nuclear medicine services and radioimmunoassay are already available and actively serving patients.

The PET/CT and cyclotron units are scheduled to become operational later this year, making SPMC the first government hospital in Mindanao to offer these advanced services.

Grateful to take part in our first quarterly meeting with the Moorehouse Mission Hospital – Thyroid Center, located in T'boli, South Cotabato, led by the dynamic and inspiring endocrinologist, Dr. Daryl Dagang.

For more than five years, I have been privileged to collaborate with this center as their Nuclear Medicine physician. Together with our Medical Physicist, Ma’am Iriss Dultra, and the dedicated Nuclear Medicine team (Ma'am Des, Ma'am Christine, and Sir Jhon Jhon), we discussed key unit concerns and explored ways to further improve and enhance our services for our patients.

The Thyroid Center offers specialized nuclear medicine services, including:
• Radioimmunoassay (TSH, FT4, Tg, anti-Tg, and others)
• Radioactive Iodine (RAI) Therapy for thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism

We began 2026 with the successful administration of a series of radioactive iodine (RAI) therapies for the management of thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism at DRMC Radionuclide Therapy Unit.

Since the DRMC Nuclear Medicine Unit began offering diagnostic services in December 2019, the hospital has envisioned expanding its capabilities by adding PET-CT to its roster of services.
Today, we held our Radiation Safety Seminar on Positron Emission Tomography. We were honored to have Sir Ariel Moleno, one of the pillars of the Medical Physics community in the country, as our guest lecturer.
With continued progress, the plan to establish a PET-CT facility at DRMC will soon become a reality.

Today marks the first anniversary of the DRMC Nuclear Medicine Radionuclide Therapy Unit. Over the past year, patients from across Mindanao—including the Davao Region, CARAGA, SOCCSKSARGEN, Northern Mindanao, BARMM, and even the Zamboanga Peninsula—have benefited from the services offered by this facility.
