Ayon sa FDA kinakailangan na ang mga generic na gamot ay may parehong "Active Ingredient" o aktibong sangkap sa parehong halaga o dami. Gayunpaman, ang iba pang mga sangkap sa gamot o ang "Inactive Ingredient", tulad ng mga filler, flavor at coloring, ay maaaring magkakaiba ngunit hindi ito nakakaapekto sa pagiging "effective" ng isang gamot.

Example ng Active Ingredient:
Paracetamol 500mg na nasa Biogesic
Cetirizine 10mg na nasa Alnix

Kung ang nireseta sayo ay mamahaling brand, maaari mo itong papalitan sa Pharmacy ng mas mura na option, basta pareho ang dosage strength (milligram) at dosage form (syrup, tablet, etc).
