THE USD-PHP EXCHANGE IS AT ONE OF ITS ALL-TIME HIGHS! BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT ALSO HELP THE COUNTRY WHEN THIS HAPPENS?

We are one of the industries that benefits from this, but also lifts up the country, so be proud if you are a virtual assistant. Here’s why freelancers actually help the economy when the USD–PHP exchange rate is high.

1. Freelancers bring in more foreign currency

When freelancers get paid in USD (or other strong currencies), a higher exchange rate means each dollar they earn converts to more pesos.

Example: If a freelancer earns $1,000, that’s ₱55,000 at ₱55/USD, but ₱60,000 when the rate is ₱60/USD.

That extra ₱5,000 is new money entering the local economy.

So when thousands of freelancers do this, it increases foreign currency , which helps strengthen the country’s gross international reserves and balance of payments.

2. Freelancers spend their earnings locally

Freelancers use their income to:
- Buy goods and services
- Pay rent and utilities
- Enroll in courses, invest in tools, or support local businesses

This stimulates , creating a ripple effect across industries from food and tech to education and retail.

3. Freelancers generate indirect employment

Freelancers often:
- Hire other freelancers to help them with graphic design, editing, or other simpler VA work
- They also hire helpers and other needed services as their lives improve
- Use local internet providers, cafes, and coworking spaces
- Contribute taxes through registered businesses or freelancers’ income tax
- This supports micro-economies and helps grow the gig ecosystem around them.

4. Freelancers stabilize HOUSEHOLD income during inflation

There are 3 economic drivers to national revenue: government, businesses, and households. Most often, households are the consumers. But with freelancing, the household also becomes an income generator.

When the peso is weak, local prices go up. But freelancers earning in USD are more shielded; their purchasing power in pesos actually increases. This stabilizes families’ finances and sustains consumer spending, even when inflation is high.

5. Freelancers reduce brain drain

Before freelancing, skilled workers often had to go abroad for better pay. Now, they can work for global clients from , keeping their talent (and spending) in the Philippines.

When the USD is strong, freelancers become a key inflow channel of foreign money, sustain local consumption, and support economic resilience, especially during tough times.

The freelancing industry is a blessing. If you are a freelancer, be proud! Your is actually not just helping you, but also the country, especially during the challenging times.
