The Municipality of Buenavista, through the Buenavista Primary Care Facility I headed by Dr. Grace F. Cortez, Municipal Health Officer, successfully conducted a Healthy Workplace Orientation for the permanent employees of the Local Government Unit of Buenavista.
To set the tone for health and wellness, the activity started with an energetic Zumba session, promoting the importance of physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. This engaging exercise served not only as a warm-up but also as a reminder that wellness can be fun, accessible, and integrated into the daily routines of employees.
This initiative is anchored on the Healthy Workplace Implementation Action Agenda No. 3 – Developing Personal Skills, which aims to equip employees with the knowledge, values, and competencies necessary to make healthier choices in their daily lives and workplace environment. By building personal skills, employees are empowered to:
Understand health risks and take proactive measures to prevent disease.
Adopt healthier lifestyle practices such as balanced diet, regular physical activity, and stress management.
Enhance coping skills to maintain good mental health and productivity at work.
Promote responsible decision-making on issues such as substance use, sexual and reproductive health, and injury prevention.
Act as advocates of health, not only for themselves but also for their families and colleagues, creating a ripple effect of wellness across the community.
This approach is integrated across all seven (7) priority areas of the Department of Health’s Health Promotion Framework Strategy (HPFS):
Diet and Physical Activity
Environmental Health
Immunization
Mental Health
Substance Abuse
Sexual and Reproductive Health
Violence and Injury Prevention
The orientation also signifies the strong commitment of the Buenavista Local Government Unit, under the leadership of Hon. Samuel T. Gumarin, Municipal Mayor, as well as the Buenavista Municipal Employees Association and the Human Resource Department, who spearheaded the organization of the activity to ensure its success. Their support and dedication, alongside the health sector, reflect the collective effort in sustaining the Healthy Workplace Program.
This orientation likewise forms part of the Municipality’s celebration of the Philippine Civil Service Month, observed every September pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1050, s. 1997. The celebration serves as a reminder that public service is a public trust, anchored on the principles of integrity, merit, accountability, and excellence as enshrined in the Civil Service Law and reinforced through the Citizen’s Charter. By integrating health promotion into the Civil Service Month activities, the LGU of Buenavista demonstrates its commitment not only to the well-being of its employees but also to providing responsive, efficient, and people-centered public service.
During the activity, Ms. Frenzy Mae M. Ardenio, RN, Health Education and Promotion Officer, and Healthy Workplace Point Person, presented the Health Risk Assessment (HRA) Accomplishment Report of the permanent employees, highlighting current health statuses and areas for improvement. Engr. Resty Ferrer, Sanitary Officer II and PhilHealth YAKAP Point Person, also discussed the PhilHealth YAKAP (Yaman ng Kalusugan, Alaga ang Pilipino) Program, explaining its components and benefits as part of PhilHealth’s commitment to provide accessible, comprehensive, and sustainable health services to every Filipino.
Meanwhile, Dr. Grace F. Cortez provided an in-depth discussion on the seven priority areas of health promotion, with emphasis on the Health Promotion Playbooks and key strategies to ensure the sustainability and continuity of the Healthy Workplace Program in the municipality.
The activity marks another step towards building a healthier, more resilient, and productive workforce, affirming the shared vision of the LGU leadership, the Employees Association, the HR Department, and the health sector to place health, wellness, and service excellence at the core of governance and public service.
