๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜’๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข, ๐˜‘๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜บ 14โ€“18, 2025 โ€” The research staff from the Center for Cellular and Molecular Medical Research (CMED) of Mariano Marcos State University recently concluded a productive scientific visit to the Animal Molecular Biochemistry Laboratory, Department of Biochemical Science, Chonnam National University (CNU), Gwangju, South Korea.

The visit, held from July 14 to 18, 2025, marks a milestone in the ongoing collaboration between MMSU and CNU, following the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions earlier this year. The activity focused on exploring the potential anti-cancer properties of locally isolated probiotic strains, particularly through in vitro assays targeting colorectal cancer cell lines.

Spearheading the activity was Dr. Peter James Gann, Center Chief of CMED, who emphasized the importance of strengthening international research linkages. Joining him were CMED laboratory managers and a research staff, Dr. James Patrick K. Peralta, Laboratory Manager of the Medical Microbiology Laboratory; Prof. Ma. Danica I. Ramil, Laboratory Manager of the Pharmacology and Cell Culture Laboratory; and Ms. Ma. Joy Theresa Agcaoili, research analyst from the Genomics and Genetic Engineering Laboratory.

Throughout the visit, the team engaged in experimental work using colorectal cancer cell models to assess the cytotoxic effects of selected probiotic isolates derived from indigenous plant sources in the Philippines, under the guidance of Dr. Sung-Hak Kim, Professor and host scientist at the Department of Biochemical Science, and Mr. Don Carlo Batara, Filipino PhD student in Division of Animal Science, Animal Engineering at CNU, who played a key role in facilitating the visit and bridging communication between MMSU and CNU researchers.

The MMSU-CNU partnership reflects a forward-looking commitment to integrative research, local biodiversity, and science converge to address global health challenges such as cancer.

The training aimed to equip researchers and technical staff with advanced knowledge in HiFi (High-Fidelity) sequencing, library preparation, and the instrument workflow of the Sequel IIe Systemโ€”one of the most powerful long-read sequencing platforms available today.

Participants were given in-depth discussions on how PacBioโ€™s HiFi reads can enhance genome assembly with greater accuracy and efficiency. With the growing importance of genomics in health, food production system, and biotechnology, CMEDโ€™s efforts to train local scientists on state-of-the-art sequencing platforms mark a crucial step forward in strengthening the countryโ€™s biomedical research capabilities.

The international conference convened global thought leaders, scientists, and policymakers to explore strategic responses to current and future challenges in agriculture through interdisciplinary collaboration.

Representing MMSUโ€™s flagship OMICS facility, Dr. Gann shared his perspectives on how health-oriented research infrastructure can be leveraged to support agricultural innovation, particularly in food systems. While CMEDโ€™s primary mission is advancing health and medical education, Dr. Gann emphasized the centerโ€™s expanding role in supporting science-based initiatives that contribute to the production of healthy and safe food products.

โ€œAt CMED, health is our topmost priority. But as the universityโ€™s core OMICS hub, we are uniquely positioned to contribute to agriculture through genomic, proteomic, and transcriptomics toolsโ€ Dr. Gann said.

Three of our students successfully defended their undergraduate theses, each offering unique molecular insights into the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties of garlic, a staple of traditional medicine now gaining renewed relevance in modern therapeutics.

These works are a product of the synergy between visionary leadership and student-driven inquiry, guided by the mentorship of Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis, Chairperson of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and co-advised by Dr. Peter James Gann, Center Chief of the Center for Cellular and Molecular Medical Research. Addressing the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance, this study evaluates the comparative bioactivity of locally cultivated garlic varieties and their black garlic counterparts, generating molecular data with potential pharmaceutical and public health relevance.
