𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐒𝐒 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒’ 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐆𝐔𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐆𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐈𝐌𝐄𝐑 𝐎𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐀𝐔𝐃𝐈𝐓 𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓

Last June 23, 2025, during our exit meeting with the PLM Student Commission on Audit (SCOA), the Mass Communication Students League (MCSL) was given the lowest audit opinion — Disclaimer — which resulted in the imposition of a one-year suspension. The decision was based on audit findings involving the unresolved turnover of funds from the previous academic year and the use of unofficial receipts during our term.
While we acknowledge our lapse in receipt documentation, we want to assure the Mass Communication community that we have already taken concrete steps to improve our financial system. Stricter protocols, proper record-keeping, and complete documentation will be fully implemented during the first semester of A.Y. 2025–2026.
In line with this, we submitted an appeal to the Office of Student Development Services (OSDS) last July 14, 2025. We communicated with them and they advised us that they would forward our appeal letter to SCOA for consideration. However, SCOA has stated in their report that “we are not in agreement with the proposal to lift these sanctions.” It is the OSDS that holds the authority to make the final decision regarding our case and the audit opinion. With this, the OSDS advised us also to re-appeal to the Vice President for Academic and External Services (VPRAES).

Given this, we are now formally re-appealing to VPRAES, humbly requesting that the suspension be reduced to one semester so we may resume operations by the second semester. This will allow us to implement all corrective measures and continue serving the student body through our planned activities, including the Alumni Cup and other academic and community projects. We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and the values that MCSL stands for.

We hope for the understanding and support of our fellow students as we work toward lifting the suspension and continuing our mission to foster academic excellence, student engagement, and community service.

THROUGH LONG LASTING WAVES, KA-MASSKOMS!

The Mass Communication Students' League serves as an avenue for PLM Mass Communication students to not only showcase their skills and discover hidden capabilities but also get to know other peers to form a healthy and lively community. Members of MCSL exude significant passion and diligence through writing, speaking, performing, and producing that'll benefit them when the time comes to step into the real world.

MCSL is committed to serving its community with their best capabilities. But our organization has its shortcomings in not being able to accomplish responsibilities and handle difficulties. But through commitment, MCSL continues on, working diligently to provide our fellow ka-masskomms what they deserve: a passionate and comforting college environment.

But MCSL wouldn't have done it without everyone!

Our fellow officers. Your dedication in serving the whole Masskom Communication means a lot to our organization's success this school year. While our term officially ended, let this experience motivate us more to help others and lead with integrity, perseverance, and positivity.

Zarena Hermogeno, a fourth-year Bachelor of Arts in Communication student from the College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences (CHASS) of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), has earned a spot in the CNN Academy’s “Voices from the South: Storytelling for Impact” fellowship—an international training program designed to amplify the voices of emerging storytellers from the Global South.

Selected from a competitive pool of over 10,800 applicants across 129 countries, Hermogeno will undergo a rigorous two-phase training to hone her media skills and deepen her understanding of global issues.

Phase One of the fellowship runs from July to October 1, 2025, and is delivered virtually through the CNN Academy Hub. During this phase, participants will complete courses on ethical storytelling, reporting techniques, and global issues, with a special focus on the Global South. Successful completion of the required courses and submission of a story pitch will determine advancement to the next phase.

Phase Two, set in November 2025, will bring selected fellows to Abu Dhabi for an intensive in-person training. Participants will receive hands-on instruction in mobile journalism and field reporting and will take part in the 2025 CNN Academy Simulation—a real-world news exercise centered on global health reporting.

Hermogeno expressed her deep gratitude for being selected for the fellowship and shared her excitement to learn, grow, and create meaningful stories—proudly representing the Pamantasan on the global stage.

PLM congratulates Zarena on this global recognition and supports her journey in becoming a force for ethical and impactful journalism.
