At August's Global Convention, we announced the introduction of a Health Professional Advisory Council. The Brand Partners will serve as ambassadors, adding credibility and fresh perspectives to help share the science behind USANA products.

Sugar May Not be so Sweet for Your Mood

Now you may have another reason to ditch the high-glycemic snacks and added sugars—mental health.

Depression is a leading cause of disease-related burden on society, and rates have continued to climb. At the same time, global consumption of refined high-glycemic-index (GI) foods is steadily rising. There is some evidence these trends may be related.

In a study of 87,000 women, researchers found a possible link between higher dietary glycemic index and glycemic load and a rise in depression.

On the other hand, higher intake of lactose (milk sugar), fiber, whole fruit, and vegetables were significantly associated with lower incidence of depression.

Although more research is needed, the study results indicate that high-GI diets and added sugars could be a risk factor for depression in older women.
