BREAKING NEWS: BILL TO REPLACE PT LAW NEARING HOUSE FINAL OK
The bill proposed to govern the practice of the physical therapy profession has earned second reading approval during plenary session of the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
“The decades-long wait of physical therapists for their new governing law is nearing its end. Physical therapists got left behind and forgotten after the occupational therapists got their own law, riding the waves of public support for worker’s rights and workplace safety,” Congresswoman Alexie Besas-Tutor said after the bill was approved.
Rep. Tutor is a registered physical therapist.
“These days, the public and Congress have a much better appreciation of what physical therapists do, how important they are in injury prevention and patients’ recovery from surgery, accidents, and serious illness.” Tutor pointed out.
“People now realize that PTs or physiotherapists help patients get their lives back and make their lives better. Aching muscles, joints, and organs need to be taught how to function well again. That’s where the PT come in to get their patients back to normal or move on to a better normal,” the lawmaker-PT explained.
Tutor said. “HB 8452 gives due respect to the mandates and domains of the Professional Regulation Commission, the colleges and universities, and the Commission on Higher Education whose governing laws have also evolved much over the decades.”
“HB 8452 is legislation in a long line of legal reforms of the many professions. It aligns with the new flexible patterns of profession laws, attuned to global standards, and best practices on government regulation of the overlaps of workplace and academe,” the Boholana physical therapist-lawmaker said.
