Suluphakia: /soo-loo-fay-kee-uh/
Suluphakia Eye Clinic is the first and only private ophthalmology clinic in the province of Sulu, dedicated to providing high-quality medical and surgical eye care services to the local community. Established by Dr. Mohammad Zeid M. Tungupon, RN, MD, DPBO, a board-certified ophthalmologist, the clinic offers a wide range of services to address various eye diseases and conditions. Patients can also access optical corrective devices, including eyeglasses and contact lenses, tailored to their specific needs.
Dr. Zeid, who earned his medical degree from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, then completed his ophthalmology residency at the Philippine General Hospital. With his training and expertise, he founded Suluphakia Eye Clinic with the vision of providing accessible and advanced eye care to the people of Sulu.
"Suluphakia" is a wordplay on "Pseudophakia," a term used to describe an eye in which cataract surgery has been performed and an artificial intraocular lens has been implanted. Hence, the "S" in "Suluphakia" is shaped like an intraocular lens. The term "Suluphakia" was coined by Dr. Alyssa Pejana-Paulino, who was a co-resident and a dear friend of Dr. Zeid at the Philippine General Hospital.
