What is Karuṇā or Compassion? During last month's Ovāda, Ven. Dr. G. Chandima shared his insights in practicing this sublime attitude of the heart in three aspects— ourselves, others and our society. Truly, wisdom is needed in expressing kindness and compassion in our daily interactions. 🙏

Yesterday’s one-day retreat with Ven. Dr. G. Chandima was both inspiring and beneficial. In his gentle yet insightful way, Bhante Chandima guided us into a clearer understanding of Karuṇā—compassion is unlike pity, and is a quality of the heart that empathizes deeply with others' pains.

Through sutta reflections, stories, and quiet practice, we were invited to see how compassion begins within ourselves, extends to our relationships, and radiates into the wider society. Bhante carefully unpacked how Karuṇā can be cultivated in everyday life, even in the face of suffering, conflict, or uncertainty.

It was a day of stillness, connection, and encouragement—a true reminder of the timeless and transformative power of the Dhamma.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this retreat so meaningful. And of course we are deeply grateful to Bhante Chandima for providing guidance and clarity.

May compassion continue to grow in our hearts. 🙏🏾

We are especially joyous to once again receive guidance from Venerable Dr. G. Chandima, who will lead us through the one-day retreat this Saturday. This month's theme focuses on Karuṇā (compassion), and it is a particularly opportune time to reflect on this quality of heart as we navigate the world’s disarray.

The Buddha taught that there are five rewards to listening to the Dhamma: one hears what one has not heard before, clarifies what one has heard before, removes doubt, straightens one’s views, and brings serenity to the mind. May we offer ourselves the conditions for stillness and peace.

There’s still time to register for the retreat—scan the QR code or visit www.kalyanamitta.org/ovada to sign up. Registration closes on Thursday, June 19.
