Coast Guard District Bicol Rescues Norwegian Nationals onboard Drifting Sailboat

LOOK: The Coast Guard District Bicol (CGDBCL), under the leadership of Commodore Ivan Roldan PCG, successfully carried out a rescue operation, saving four Norwegian nationals onboard the SY NORA Simrad sailboat that was found drifting in the vicinity waters off Cabugao Bay, Virac, Catanduanes today, 17 May 2025.

Upon receipt of the distress call, the Coast Guard Station Catanduanes promptly initiated coordination efforts and attempted to establish radio communication to locate the distressed vessel, however no response was recieved.

CGDBCL then coordinated with Tactical Operations Group (TOG) 5 of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) to conduct aerial surveillance, due to the vessel’s intermittent communication and limited visibility in the area.

After confirming the sailboat’s position through direct communication with the vessel’s contact and aerial surveillance findings, a towing operation was launched. The tugboat M/T Iriga was dispatched from Legazpi Port, carrying a Deployable Response Team composed of personnel from the Special Operations Unit Bicol (SOU-BCL), Maritime Safety Services Unit Bicol (MSSU-BCL), CG Medical Station Bicol (CG MEDS-BCL), CG Nursing Service Sub-unit Bicol (CG NSSU-BCL), and Civil Relations Group Bicol (CRG-BCL) to provide assistance and safely tow the vessel toward the port of Catanduanes.

All four crew members received medical evaluation from CG Medical Station Bicol upon arrival and were reported in good health.

This timely and coordinated operation highlights the Coast Guard District Bicol’s unwavering commitment to maritime safety and its capability to respond swiftly to emergencies involving both local and foreign vessels within the country’s maritime domain.
