Dry eye syndrome is generally caused by issues that disrupt the healthy tear film.
This can happen for the following reasons:
* Decreased Tear Production (Aqueous-Deficient Dry Eye):
* Age: Tear production naturally diminishes as you get older, especially over the age of 50.
* Medical Conditions: Autoimmune disorders like Sjögren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus.
* Medications: Certain drugs, including some antihistamines, decongestants, blood pressure medicines, and antidepressants.
* Gland Damage: Damage to the tear-producing glands from inflammation, radiation, or disease.
* Increased Tear Evaporation (Evaporative Dry Eye):
* Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD): The meibomian glands in your eyelids don't produce enough of the oily layer of tears, causing the watery layer to evaporate too quickly.
This is a very common cause.
* Environmental Factors: Exposure to wind, smoke, dry air (from air conditioning or heating), or high altitudes (like on an airplane).
* Prolonged Screen Time: Activities that reduce your blinking rate, such as looking at a computer screen, reading, or driving for long periods.
* Contact Lenses: Wearing contact lenses can contribute to tear evaporation and discomfort.
* Allergies or Inflammation: Inflamed eyelid glands or allergic eye disease.
