Strength Training and my 2 cents on why its important for Sport/s.

This has been brewing in me for awhile, I finally got the chance to make a thread about it.

Last seminar done for this month!

Thank you so much

Prof

Who is Such a down to earth person even after competing at the highest levels ( currently UFC BJJ). It was fascinating to learn your jiu jitsu and with you adding little snippets from your Coach on how you developed your concepts.

I think its now time for me to try all these things Ive learned and figure out which ones I can add to my game.

Special thanks to for this event!

No Mercy!

Its actually LEVEL Up your game

Choice words from Professor

Amazing to learn from one of the BJJ Hall of Famers even for one workshop.

Hoping to incorporate the concepts, that Prof Cobrinha imparted, in my game.

This month of July 2025 continues to provide more learning experiences;

As well as seeing old teammates such as .sangalang & !

Thank you to Prof and the team for the hospitality and opening their doors for other teams 🙏🏽

Thank you c/o Prof for hosting this reunion.

Early 2000s
Gracie Barra Parchouse EDSA of Prof

Seems contradictory but it is refreshing to see old teammates.

Fritz was actually in my corner for the 2006 Pan Asians, I still remember him shouting to get out of that tough omoplata!

wish you were here Prof noelp

Posting not to celebrate my Pan Asian record ( counting 2006 Pan Asian )

But to Celebrate 1 straight year of consistently going back to BJJ.

Today marks June 2024-June 2025.

Its been a blessing to return to BJJ training.

As some of these pictures will show those who have trained with me for these 12 months; its great to train and interact with all those Ive shared the mats with.

Just got to keep on wanting to improve on the mats so that I can earn that very first Pan Asian win.

What does a belt mean?

What did my blue belt mean? Tbh, It became heavy, especially after 3 “failed” tries, of trying to return to the mats. What changed? Life kept smashing at me like waves crashing on a rock grounded at the beach, preventing me from swimming out.

In all my years as a blue belt, all those frustrating and difficult spars and injuries were like those waves preventing me from reaching my destination.

What does a purple belt mean?

Right Now, it’s new and seems less heavy, but in a way it presents the madness of the drive within me that I had to push myself through).
There is some relief but i think, the lesson in this current journey, is to keep that white belt mentality, learning from every training instructional and session.
Moreover, be especially grateful to everyone who helped me along the way.

My last competition was in 2006 Pan Asia in Manila as a blue belt.
Fast forward now to 2025 still as a blue belt 😅. So many things I would like to write about, but one major eye opener was how hard it was to win.
On both matches I felt like I was losing my grip to win or to keep myself in the match. Its crazy how sudden death extensions go! Crossing the line twice was a blessing and couldn’t have happened without two super tough opponents.
I think one of the major differences from my last tournament (aside from the gap 😅) was my knowledge(through studying and asking) and my love for Sports Science.

All the Jiu Jitsu game planning, I allowed my coaches to lead and guide me!

But the Sports Science part I challenged myself to handle on my own.
I just wanted to put my studies into practice.

Here are the 5 main points that I was able to manage on my own but with guidance from my studies in ACU’s Master of High Performance Sport and of course through asking S&C mentors.

Periodization of Volume - I forecasted a 7-8 week plan, specifically training sessions.

Observing Intensity of training via wearables - periodisation also recommends observing intensity. The Polar verity sense totally was a game changer in measuring the intensities.

HRV - measuring Parasympathetic Activity - using HRV4 training. There were a few sessions during the 8 week plan wherein I had to take it easy because my morning measurements showed suboptimal HRV.

Nutrition- through my nutrition class I was able to get to know an amazing nutritionist in Reid Reale who happened to release a book in BJJ fanatics. This helped me cut weight 4 weeks before the comp and just maintain the weight.

Taper Attempt - this was the toughest to do on my own but it was never going to be ideal due to my shoulder injury.

Of course it’s only one competition, but thats the cool thing about science, it can be challenged in the next competition.

If you got up to this part, thank you for reading! And I’m totally up for feedback 😅.
