Itโs not just hard work and sleepless nights; sometimes it's about a sharpened pencil.
"Same dreams, shared lucks" --- thatโs how they explain what it is.
Miky, her nickname, along with her classmates, dreamed of being part of the growing family of DOST Scholars in the province of Bulacan. She is a junior-level BS Environmental Science student, full of dreams, passion, and enthusiasm.
During her senior high days, she was not able to apply for the DOST-SEI Undergraduate Examination, having not enough courage and knowledge regarding the scholarship opportunity.
This year, it was different; an unforgettable experience was about to unfold.
Amid the stress and excitement, they turned to an age-old Filipino tradition for a little extra luck. A long-time superstition that has been part of our culture as Filipinos, which is still thriving for generations.
โPatasa Para Pumasaโ is one of the most common practices that Filipinos created. It is believed that when someone who has passed an exam sharpens the pencil you will use during the exam, their success and guidance will pass or transfer to you.
To some, it is strange and nonsense. Others treat it as a gamble, putting all their faith in something that is uncertain instead of relying solely on preparation and study. But for Miky and her friends, along with other aspirants, trying it was simply a little extra push.
The sharpened pencil became a symbol of camaraderie, hope, and culture that adds color to our journey, making our experiences more fun and unforgettable.
Now, they wait. Whether itโs the superstition or their hard work and sleepless nights, or both? Miky, together with her friends and other aspirants, holds on to hope, waiting to sharpen their future.
How about you? Have you tried it? Or will you?
