Learn the types of Diabetes
Small steps lead to big impacts
There are mainly two types of diabetes:
β’ Type 1, which is autoimmune and often develops in childhood
β’Type 2, which is more common and typically related to lifestyle factors.
Symptoms for both types can include increased thirst, frequent urination, extreme fatigue, and blurred vision. Type 2 may also cause slow-healing wounds and frequent infections.
Preventing Type 2 diabetes largely involves lifestyle changes:
1. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight can significantly reduce the risk.
2. Regular Physical Activity: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, such as walking, swimming, or cycling.
3. Healthy Diet: Focus on whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Limit sugary beverages and processed foods.
4. Monitor Blood Sugar Levels: Regular check-ups can help detect early signs of diabetes and allow for timely intervention.
5. Limit Alcohol Intake: Drinking in moderation can help reduce the risk.
6. Quit Smoking: Smoking increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes and other serious health issues.
7. Manage Stress: Chronic stress can affect blood sugar levels, so practices like mindfulness or yoga can be beneficial.
For Type 1 diabetes, prevention isnβt currently possible, as it is an autoimmune condition. Early detection and management are crucial for both types.
