๐As of May 29, the Philippines has reported 25 confirmed and 13 suspected cases of Monkeypox (Mpox) in multiple regions including Central Visayas, Davao, and BARMM.
๐ก What is Mpox?
Mpox is a viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus, a cousin of smallpox. It spreads through close, prolonged contact and is now seen in clusters around the country.
๐งฌ Transmission:
โข Skin-to-skin contact, especially during intimate or prolonged contact
โข Respiratory droplets during close face-to-face interaction
โข Contact with contaminated objects (e.g., clothing, linens, surfaces)
๐งโโ๏ธ Symptoms:
โข Fever, chills
โข Headache and swollen lymph nodes
โข Body aches and fatigue
โข Progressive rash: macules โ papules โ vesicles (blisters) โ pustules โ scabs
โข Rash often appears on the face, hands, ge****ls, or trunk
๐งช Diagnosis:
โข Confirmed through PCR testing of skin lesions
โข Clinical history and physical exam support early suspicion
๐ Treatment:
โข Most cases are mild and self-limiting
โข Severe cases may need supportive care or investigational antivirals like tecovirimat (not widely available)
๐ก๏ธ Prevention (No vaccine available locally):
โข Avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms
โข Maintain good hand hygiene and disinfect surfaces
โข Healthcare workers: use full PPE when assessing rashes or suspect cases
