Uh oh! Is your child constantly doing any of these? Keep an eye out for the following warning signs of an eye problem!
👉 Rubbing his/her eyes: Check the physical state of the eyes. Redness, puffiness or discharge could be caused by an eye infection such as conjunctivitis. A lack of those symptoms could mean the cause is eye strain, which is a common result of vision problems like refractive errors.
👉 Squinting: Doing this when watching TV or looking at a distant object may indicate difficulty focusing because of a vision problem.
👉 Closing or covering one eye: Doing this when reading could be an attempt to see more clearly by closing off input from the bad eye that produces blurrier vision or to reduce double vision caused by conditions such as strabismus (crossed eyes).
👉 Tilting his/her head: Keeping chin up or down, tilting or turning head to the left or right with eyes focused straight ahead can be caused by strabismus (crossed eyes), refractive errors, ptosis (droopy eyelid), nystagmus (uncontrolled eye movements) or eyes having different visual clarity.
👉 Sitting close to the TV: This could be due to myopia (short-sightedness), a refractive error that makes nearby objects much clearer than distant objects.
