LIVING WELL WITH ARTHRITIS AND LUPUS
In celebration of the World Arthritis Day last October 12, 2024, a joint activity by the Lupus Inspired Advocacy (LUISA) and People Empowerment for Arthritis and Lupus (PEARL) was held, through the combined efforts of the Section of Rheumatology of UST Hospital and St. Luke's Medical Center, QC last October 13, 2024.
ARTHRITIS is a symptom that can cause a lot of physical, emotional, and social problems to the people affected by it, eventually, affecting their spiritual health. From the POV of someone who has no inflammatory arthritis, it seems easily treated and negligible. However, these patients, warriors who are bravely battling their conditions, will say otherwise. Most of them experienced significant changes in their lives in terms of their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual health due to their arthritis. You may not realize it but arthritis can (1) be debilitating and distressful, (2) bring anxiety and shame, and (3) cause loss of self confidence, social isolation, and positive outlook in life - all of these resulting to decreased quality of life.
Patients living with arthritis, both children and adults, actually deserve to be treated equally like those who do not have it. They should be accepted for who they are and not be judged by their physical limitations or inadequacies brought about by their arthritis. They do want to be understood by the people around them so they would not feel different from everyone else. Lastly, let us be the support system they need, someone to talk to and share their feelings with, someone they can be with during their battle against their condition, and someone who can help them see and feel that life is still worth living despite having arthritis.
