DOH Sec Ted Herbosa and United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary-General Ms. Amina J. Mohammed recently reaffirmed both institutions' shared commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on universal health, health equity, and building resilience against climate-related health impacts and pandemics.
Sec. Herbosa shared the progress on health and sanitation under SDGs #3 and #4, while also outlining areas requiring further focus. Key priorities discussed included increasing investments in maternal and child health to reduce mortality rates, adolescent pregnancy, and child stunting. Through the DOHβs 8-Point Action Agenda, the Department aims to implement targeted interventions that keep the Philippines on track to meet its SDG commitments, prioritizing maternal and child health, climate-resilient health systems, non-communicable and infectious disease control, and enhanced digital health infrastructure.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General also emphasized that with only five years left to achieve the SDGs, transformative action is essential. Ms. Mohammed outlined the need for leveraging technology to accelerate progress, strengthening sustainable financing systems, and addressing key areas for improvement in the Philippines. She stressed the importance of a robust policy and regulatory environment that encourages local financial and social investments and a focus on larger, impactful projects that reflect the scale of the SDG vision and would ensure lasting success. She added that a balanced financial structure with mechanisms designed for long-term, meaningful progress is crucial.
With a focused roadmap of targeted health interventions, strengthened institutions, and strategic financing, the Philippines with the help of UN aims to drive impactful change in the years leading up to 2030, ensuring that every Filipino benefits from the progress toward a more resilient, equitable, and healthier future.
