On Good Friday, Christians commemorate the arrest, trial, crucifixion, death, and burial of Jesus Christ, believed to be the Son of God. He was sentenced to death by Pontius Pilate, scourged, mocked by soldiers, forced to carry his cross, and crucified at Calvary (Golgotha) before dying and being buried.✝️
The Seven Last Words of Jesus are the final seven phrases spoken while hanging on the cross, as recorded in the Gospels. They are profound utterances of forgiveness, salvation, filial relationship, abandonment, physical suffering, victory, and trust in God.
The Seven Sayings (in traditional order):
1. "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." (Luke 23:34) - A prayer for his executioners.
2. "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise." (Luke 23:43) - Spoken to the penitent thief.
3. "Woman, behold your son: behold your mother." (John 19:26-27) - Entrusting Mary and the beloved disciple to one another.
4. "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34) - Expressing the agony of feeling abandoned by God.
5. "I thirst." (John 19:28) - Expressing his physical suffering.
6. "It is finished." (John 19:30) - Indicating the completion of his earthly ministry and salvation mission.
7. "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit." (Luke 23:46) - Final act of surrender.
