The Big Three: Still Foundational
- Criollo: prized for flavor, low yield, white beans
- Forastero: hardy, high-yield, often bulk cacao
- Trinitario: hybrid of Criollo × Forastero, combining flavor and resilience

These clones are stabilized selections, meaning they’ve been tested and registered for performance in local agro-climatic zones. While they may not be “new species,” they are recognized varieties under NSIC standards.

Beyond the Label: Genetic Diversity

Recent studies suggest cacao has at least 10 distinct genetic groups globally—not just the big three. Some cultivars like Nacional (Ecuador) or Amelonado (West Africa) are often lumped under Forastero but have unique traits.
