The Arellano Law Student Government (ALSG) on Thursday has officially released the proposed 2025 Arellano University School of Law student constitution, marking a significant step toward institutionalizing clearer, more accountable, and student-driven governance.
At the core of the proposed constitution is the recognition and protection of student rights, included in a comprehensive Bill of Rights of AUSL students.
The section guarantees due process, academic freedom, transparency in school policies, freedom of expression and association, access to mental health and student support services, and protection against discrimination and retaliation.
โIt is timely and necessary to adopt a student constitution for the Arellano University School of Law to formally articulate the rights, responsibilities, and structure of student governance for the benefit of the entire student body,โ ALSG President Kent Carandang said on Thursday.
The proposed document positions student welfare, participation, and accountability as central pillars of student governance.
Equally significant is the constitutionโs clear structuring of student governance bodies which includes the definition of powers, composition, and limitation of the ALSG Central Board, Commission on Elections (COMELEC), the Student Tribunal Council (STC), and the Bar Operations Commission (BOC).
This charter also underscores the independence of COMELEC in electoral matters and establishes the STC as the sole judicial body for resolving constitutional and governance disputes, ensuring due process and impartiality.
โThis constitution is intended to serve as a clear and enduring guide for future Arellano Law Student Governments, recognized student organizations, and law students, ensuring continuity, accountability, and democratic representation across academic terms,โ Carandang added.
In addition, a strict Anti-Hazing Policy declaring a zero-tolerance stance against hazing and explicitly reiterating the School of Lawโs non-recognition of fraternities and sororities were also included in the proposed constitution.
โIts implementation is vital to ensuring that AUSL remains a safe environment and haven for students, where learning, leadership, and camaraderie are fostered without fear, coercion, or harm,โ Carandang noted.
According to the ALSG, the publication of the proposed constitution forms part of the mandatory constitutional process prior to ratification.
Students are strongly encouraged to read and study the full text, as the document will serve as the foundational governing framework of student representation and participation once approved.
Details on the schedule and procedures for the plebiscite will be announced separately through the official channels of the Arellano Law Student Government and the Arellano Law Commission on Elections.
The draft constitution, prepared by the Constitutional Commission, is now open for review by all bona fide students in preparation for its eventual submission to a plebiscite.
