Many Autistic people (especially young girls!) are described as “stubborn” and “independent” - and while those things may be true, there’s often underlying reasons for these character or personality traits caused by… Autism 🌈♾️

Autism is a combination of differences in the areas of social communication and interests/routines/sensory. Let’s break this post down, and keep in mind that some differences are actually strengths (like independence!)

Differences in social communication:
1️⃣ Inconsistent engagement with others - on their own terms
2️⃣ Hugging everyone/not recognizing implied social rules of strangers and invading personal space
3️⃣ Atypical Voice quality - exaggerated tone of voice
4️⃣ Self-driven and does not often include other’s ideas in play, no response to others at times
5️⃣ Can ask for help, but does not initiate this- instead depends on self

Interests/Routines/Sensory:
1️⃣ Self- driven plans that are relatively inflexible - struggles accepting changes to their play plan
2️⃣ Repeats play routines, often ones that are imitated/directly taught
3️⃣ Easily dysregulated with changes or when things do not go as expected
4️⃣ Sensory seeking: hugging and rubbing arms and faces
5️⃣ Sensory avoiding: grooming activities, clothing materials
6️⃣ Clear interests in how particular they are about characters and colors in clothing

It’s the COMBINATION of these traits that would identify a child with this profile as likely Autistic. Autism would *NOT* be just 1 or 2 things listed.
