Conversation on Mental Health & Disability Inclusion:
A Key Informant Interview | June 28, 2025

I had the privilege of participating in a Key Informant Interview (KII) led by a team from the University of the Philippines, where we explored community-based mental health initiatives and the psychological needs of older adults and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

As Chair of the PAP PWD Psychology Special Interest Group, I shared our ongoing advocacy and capacity-building efforts, ranging from psychoeducation for caregivers, policy support for the Neurodivergent Peoples' Rights Act (HB No. 09787), to public mental health talks in schools, LGUs, and national fora.

While the SIG’s core mandate is not clinical service delivery, I clarified that our engagements often include responsive education and outreach that intersect with advocacy. Outside this role, I continue to provide psychological support through programs like Katuwang sa Pangkalusugang Mental ng Tagaytay, where our interdisciplinary team supports underserved communities across Cavite and beyond.

Grateful to the University of the Philippines Research Team for the thoughtful dialogue, and for the certificate of appreciation. Let’s continue building inclusive and trauma-informed systems where mental health is accessible to all. šŸ˜

Who takes care of the carers?

After Candy Pangilinan bravely showed a vulnerable moment with her son Quentin, many people realized just how difficult Candy's position was, taking care of a child who is on the autism spectrum.

Being a parent of a child in the autism spectrum means taking them to therapies and other interventions while securing their future and helping them be independent.

In this feature article, GMA News Online interviewed those who take care of people in the spectrum.

What is the Gawad Bughaw recognition and how does it reflect the contributions and values of the individual honored in this recognition?

"Honoring a Champion of Community Mental Health and Educational Partnership"

This award, titled "Sertipiko ng Pagkilala", was conferred by the Department of Education – Schools Division of Cavite Province through the Tagaytay City National High School – Integrated Senior High School. It was presented to Dr. Antero Rosauro V. Arias, Jr., on behalf of the Tanggapan ng Katuwang sa Pangkalusugang Mental ng Tagaytay, as a formal and heartfelt recognition of his exemplary contributions to public service, particularly in mental health advocacy.

The citation honors the recipient for his unwavering support, meaningful partnerships, and outstanding service that significantly enriched the lives of learners and the entire school community. His involvement directly contributed to the growth, development, and psychosocial well-being of Batang TCNHS-ISHS, resonating with the Department of Education’s vision for inclusive and holistic learning environments.

Awarded on April 15, 2025, during the Stakeholders’ Appreciation Summit and Gawad Bughaw (Bunyi sa Ugali, Galing at Husay Awards) held at the Tagaytay Country Hotel, the plaque signifies the deep gratitude of the educational community toward individuals and institutions whose advocacy work leaves a lasting impact.

His recognition is not just a testament to his professional excellence but also a reflection of his deep commitment to community mental health and educational upliftment — an ethos that defines his leadership at the grassroots and institutional levels.
