A three-day Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Workshop was conducted for the employees of the Department of Health โ€“ Camarines Sur Rehabilitation and Treatment Center last May 21-23, 2025, at Villa Rosita Hotel.

The workshop was designed to equip the participants with fundamental knowledge on mental health, as well as practical skills in recognizing signs of distress, providing immediate psychosocial support, and connect individuals to appropriate professional help when needed.

Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in interactive discussions and simulation activities designed to enhance their confidence and competence in responding to mental health crisesโ€”whether among clients, colleagues, or themselves.

This activity highlights the growing recognition of mental health as a priority in healthcare and rehabilitation work. By empowering first responders, frontliners and staff with mental health first aid skills, we take an important step toward creating more compassionate, supportive, and psychologically safe environments within our institutions.

In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month this May, the ADNU Center for Psychological Services, in collaboration with its MA Counseling Psychology student-practicumers, had the privilege of hosting a Mental Health Literacy Seminar on May 18, 2025, at Iriga City District Jail, La Purisima, Iriga City.

This seminar was specifically tailored for Women and LGBTQIA+ Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs), focusing on the critical importance of mental health awareness and effective stress management strategies.

Through meaningful and interactive discussions, the seminar aimed to break the stigma surrounding mental health while equipping participants with practical tools to improve their emotional well-being and cope with lifeโ€™s challenges more effectively.

As we continue to observe the Mental Health Awareness Month, we are reminded that mental well-being is a fundamental part of overall health, and it is essential that we create inclusive spaces for open conversations around mental health, no matter the environment.

๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’š May is Mental Health Awareness Month ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿง

This month, weโ€™re shining a light on the importance of mental well-being. Mental health is just as vital as physical healthโ€”and everyone deserves the support, space, and understanding to care for theirs.

Whether you're thriving, struggling, or somewhere in between, remember: you are not alone. Your feelings are valid, your story matters, and help is always within reach.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Join the conversation. Share resources. Check in on someone. And most importantly, take care of yourself.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY! ๐Ÿ’œ

In celebration of International Womenโ€™s Day, we highlight Dr. Estefania Aldaba-Lim, the first woman to receive a doctorate in clinical psychology (David et al., 2007). Throughout her distinguished and global career, Dr. Aldaba-Lim specialized in clinical psychology, counseling, population issues, and child welfare (Sexton & Hogan, 1992).

She became the first director of the Institute for Human Relations at Philippine Womenโ€™s University and established the Filipino branch of the Psychological Corporation, a New York-based initiative. Additionally, she played a pivotal role in founding the Philippine Association of Psychologists and the Philippine Mental Health Association, later serving as president of both organizations. From 1971 to 1977, she held the position of Secretary of the Department of Social Services and Development in the Philippine cabinet (David et al., 2007).

Her impact extended globally when she was appointed as the United Nations Special Representative for the International Year of the Child (Gupte, 1977). In recognition of her contributions, she received the UN Peace Medal in 1979. In 1992, the American Psychological Association honored her with the Centennial Citation for Distinguished International Service in Psychology in the Area of Public Interest (David et al., 2007).

Celebrating the strength, resilience, and brilliance of women everywhere this !

Let us honor the contributions of women in shaping our society and continue to empower one another. As Dr. Lourdes Carandang, a prominent Filipino psychologist, once said, "Women have the innate capacity to nurture, heal, and transform not just their families, but also their communities and the world."

Letโ€™s keep breaking barriers and inspiring change.

This Love Month is a time to honor all the meaningful connections in your life. Love comes in many forms, each equally impactful and essential to our experiences. From the bonds that formed with our friends to the warmth that our family gives, and even the relationship we have with ourselves, love is far more diverse and beautiful than we seem to realize.

Hereโ€™s a quick recap of the different kinds of love according to ancient Greek philosophy:

Philautia refers to self-respect, self-care, and the recognition of oneโ€™s worth. It is rooted in the ancient Greek concept of self-examination and the care of the self (epimeleia heautou), as emphasized in Socratic philosophy. This form of love is not selfish but rather a necessary foundation for personal growth and the ability to love others. As Reydams-Schils (2022) notes, philautia is tied to the Delphic injunction "Know Thyself" and the soulโ€™s journey toward truth and self-awareness.

Storge refers to the natural, familial love shared between parents and children, siblings, or extended family. It is characterized by loyalty, familiarity, and unconditional care, often rooted in shared experiences and a sense of belonging. Unlike romantic or passionate love, storge is enduring and comforting, embodying the warmth of a parentโ€™s hug or the laughter shared with siblings. C.S. Lewis, in The Four Loves (1960), describes storge as one of the four fundamental types of love, emphasizing its role in familial relationships and its contrast with other forms of love like eros (romantic love) or philia (friendship).

Philia is the deep bond of friendship built on mutual respect, trust, and shared values. It is the love felt for close friends who stand by you through lifeโ€™s challenges. Unlike familial or romantic love, philia is less instinctual and more intentional, often arising from shared interests or ideals. C.S. Lewis, in The Four Loves (1960), describes philia as the least "natural" of loves, as it is not driven by biological or physical impulses but rather by a conscious choice to connect with others on a deeper level.

TIE A YELLOW RIBBON: COMMEMORATING THE PEOPLE POWER ANNIVERSARY

"Honoring the spirit of People Power in todayโ€™s challenging times. ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ As we tie yellow ribbons around campus, we remember not just the historic struggle against dictatorship but also the ongoing fight for truth, justice, and democracy in the Philippines. With disinformation, historical distortion, and threats to press freedom on the rise, keeping the spirit of EDSA alive means standing firm against oppression and defending the rights our nation fought so hard to reclaim. Letโ€™s come together, remember our history, and continue the fight for a truly free and democratic Philippines.
