CEBU CITY — In preparation for the upcoming welcome week and back-to-school activities, the University of San Carlos Psychology Society (USC PsycSoc) invited the Philippine Mental Health Association Cebu Chapter to serve as an exhibitor for their events this August.

An online coordination meeting was held to formally discuss the collaboration. The initiative is spearheaded by Ms. Saudin Avegail Goc-ong, USC PsycSoc's External Vice President, who underscored the importance of immersing psychology students especially first-year students, in mental health initiatives and community advocacy early in their academic journey.

Joining her were key officers of the organization, including Ms. Hearth Silawan, President; Ms. Mari Josienne Cabrera, Executive Vice President; Ms. Joleannah Vanessa Labrador, Internal Vice President; and Ms. Rica Mae Ansay, Executive Secretary, who each expressed strong support for the initiative.

Representing PMHA Cebu Chapter was Ms. Phoebe Gwynn Francisco, Chapter Executive Manager, who warmly welcomed the invitation and affirmed the organization's commitment to the collaboration. She also provided an overview of PMHA Cebu’s history, advocacy work, and flagship programs, which include mental health talks, capacity-building training, consultation services, and awareness campaigns across schools, workplaces, and local communities.

The upcoming events mark a meaningful step toward cultivating mental health awareness among future practitioners and highlight the shared mission between academic institutions and mental health organizations in promoting psychological well-being.

Further coordination is underway for PMHA Cebu’s exhibition setup and engagement activities on campus, contributing to a vibrant and impactful August celebration for the USC Psychology Department.

Atangi!

In a historic move for local mental health advocacy, the City Government of Danao has officially renewed its Memorandum of Agreement with the Philippine Mental Health Association Cebu Chapter, extending the partnership for a full two years, a first among all local government units (LGUs) in collaboration with the chapter.

The renewed agreement was finalized during a joint committee hearing held last March 18, 2025, with City Councilor Hon. Edmund Lao, Chairman of the Committee on Laws, Rules, and Privileges, Good Governance, and Public Ethics, serving as the presiding officer. The renewal was approved through the committee reading of Hon. Kristine Gorre, Chairman of the Committee on Health and Public Sanitation.

This strengthened partnership also came at the request of the City Health Services Office, led by Dr. Eric Echavez, recognizing the positive impact of PMHA’s mental health programs on the community.

As part of this renewed commitment, mental health consultations is scheduled this coming August 9, 2025, to be held at the Danao City Civic Center.

Through this agreement, PMHA Cebu will continue to provide vital services including mental health consultations, psychoeducation, capacity-building trainings, and psychiatric interventions in coordination with the city’s health and social welfare offices.

The City of Danao now sets a strong precedent for other LGUs across Cebu and beyond, proving that lasting impact is possible when partnerships are built on shared advocacy, accountability, and compassion.

The implementation of the Philippine Mental Health Act (RA 11036) is not just the responsibility of national institutions — it begins in our very own barangays.

📍 Local Government Units (LGUs) play a vital role in bringing mental health services closer to the people. From ensuring access to community-based programs to integrating mental health in local policies, their leadership paves the way for inclusive, sustainable support systems.

But it doesn’t stop there.

🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️ You, too, have the power to make a difference.

Whether you're a youth leader, a concerned citizen, or a mental health advocate, you can lobby for relevant mental health programs in your barangay. Your voice matters in shaping a future where mental well-being is protected, promoted, and prioritized at the grassroots level.

📌 Let’s work together in building communities where seeking help is encouraged, services are accessible, and no one is left behind.

Mental health is a right, and advocacy is our shared responsibility.
