The “Rx” symbol you see on prescription pads and pharmacy signs actually comes from the Latin word “recipere,” which means “to take.”

In the early days of medicine, doctors would begin every prescription with “Recipere,” instructing the pharmacist (or apothecary) to “take” certain ingredients and prepare the remedy. Over time, this word was shortened to “℞”, a symbol still used globally to represent prescriptions.

📜 In ancient times, the Rx symbol was sometimes associated with Jupiter, the Roman god of healing and protection, and it was believed to invoke divine blessings for the effectiveness of the medicine.

Today, Rx is a universal sign of trusted, professional healthcare, symbolizing a doctor's order and a pharmacist’s duty to prepare the right treatment—safely and accurately.
