The annual conduct of Operation ๐๐ช๐ฎ๐ฃ๐ข๐ฏ๐จ (OPT) Plus will not be complete without the โPlusโ, which is the height or length measurement.
For children measured in a standing position, height is taken. This is usually done to children aged 24-59 months old (2-5 years old). On the other hand, length measurement is done when a child is measured while lying down. Length is taken among children 0-23 months old (0-2 years old) and to those children who are older than two (2) years old but are not able to stand upright.
Height or length measurement has been an integral part of the OPT Plus since 2012 by virtue of the NNC Governing Board Resolution No. 2, series of 2012, โApproving the Revised Implementing Guidelines on Operation ๐๐ช๐ฎ๐ฃ๐ข๐ฏ๐จ (OPT) Plusโ. Height or length measurement has been included in the OPT Plus as the combination of the childโs height and weight measurements aid best in determining the childโs nutritional status. By taking height or length, one will know the childโs height- or length-for-age status (stunted, normal, or tall) and weight-for-height or -length status (wasted, normal, or overweight/obese).
In taking the childโs height/length, appropriate measurement tools must be used. Recommended measuring tools for length and height-taking are infantometer and vertical height board or stadiometer, respectively. Prior to taking the length/height of children, a few reminders must be observed:
1. Headboard is secure and in place. Foot piece is straight and slides smoothly.
2. Numbers in the board are legible and easy to read, and the unit is at 0.1 cm.
3. Calibrated within the past three (3) years and verified within one (1) year with signed sticker.
It is just as important to follow appropriate procedures in measuring length or height. Get the accurate length and height data by following the step-by-step procedure below:
๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ด๐๐ต ๐ ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐
In doing length measurement, the child is measured while in a lying/supine position. This should be accomplished by at least (2) two people along with the childโs mother or caregiver to keep the child calm and relaxed while being measured. To make the child comfortable, a thin cloth can be placed attached to the board. Remove the childโs shoes, head or hair ornaments, and lower garments (including the diaper, if possible) as this can contribute to inaccurate measurement.
1. Place the measuring board on a hard flat and stable surface on the floor or on the table. The movable headboard should be adjusted freely.
2. Inform the mother/caregiver about the conduct of length measurement and why it is conducted.
3. Place the child lying in the middle of the measuring board, with the head against the side of the fixed headboard.
4. The assistant must hold the sides of the childโs head, making sure that it firmly touches the fixed headboard with the childโs hair flattened.
5. Ensure that the childโs line of sight is at the right angle to the measuring board. (90 degrees). The childโs eyes should be looking straight up.
6. Measurer will hold the childโs legs and stretch them gently while keeping one hand on the knees to avoid bending. After positioning the childโs legs, the measurer will pull the sliding footboard until it touches firmly to the childโs soles.
7. Measurer will read the measurement at 90 degrees angle to the axis of the board vertically.
8. Childโs length is read by the measurer and recorded to the nearest 0.1 centimeter by the assistant.

Similar to length measurement, the measurer, assistant and the childโs parent or caregiver should work together. Remove the childโs socks or footwear and any head or hair ornaments that may result in an inaccurate measurement.
1. Place the vertical height board on a level surface, and if possible, against a wall, ensuring that the board is not moving.
2. Explain to the mother/caregiver the conduct and purpose of height measurement.
3. Let the child stand in an upright position. Make sure that the back of the head, shoulder blades, buttocks, calves, and heels touch the vertical board.
4. Keep the childโs legs and feet flat by holding his/her knees and ankles and prevent him/her from standing on his/her toes.
5. Position the head and instruct the child to look straight ahead to make sure that his/her sight is perpendicular to the ground. Put thumb and forefinger over the childโs chin, keeping the head in an upright position.
6. Using the other hand, pull down the movable headpiece and ensure it firmly touches the childโs head, making sure it pushes through his/her hair.
7. After securing that the child is in the right position, the childโs height is read at eye level and recorded by the assistant to the nearest 0.1 centimeter.
Generally, 0-23 month old children are measured lying down, while 24-59 month old children are measured standing up. However, there are instances this is not followed due to the childโs inability to stand or refusal to lie down. In this case, necessary adjustments will be applied in taking the measurement accordingly:
โข If a 0-23 month old child was measured standing up, add 0.7 centimeters to the acquired measurement.
โข If a 24-59 month old child was measured lying down, subtract 0.7 centimeters to the obtained measurement.
OPT Plus is used as an indicator to measure the quality of nutrition programs and interventions, as a guide for identifying priority areas for nutrition programming, and as a basis for targeting when developing a local nutrition action plan.
OPT Plus ๐๐ข๐ฎ๐ข๐ฏ๐จ ๐๐ถ๐ฌ๐ข๐ต, ๐๐ฌ๐ด๐ข๐ฌ๐ต๐ฐ๐ฏ๐จ ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ช๐ฅ๐ข๐ฅ (๐๐๐๐) provides accurate measurement that gives better picture on the actual situation of nutrition in the community. (Nutrition Officer II Keishe Jan T. Aban/ nnc_x@yahoo.com / 0963-109-0198)
