Does Anore**al Malformations happen in families?
Our general answer is no, it does not happen in families (brothers and sisters and future generations son or daughter).
This is the reason why we always encourage parents of our patients to have more kids. But the reality is that there is one type of Anore**al Malformation that does happen in families.
It is called the Currarrino triad: Anore**al Malformation + sacral defect + presacral mass. Most common types of Anore**al Malformation in this triad are: recto-perineal fistula and anore**al stenosis.

Recto-va**nal fistula is a very rare congenital anomaly, Dr. Peña refers to it as almost non-existent. The re**um opens in the posterior wall of the va**na. The prognosis for bowel control is excellent, provided the patient has normal sacrum, no tethered cord, and receives a technically good operation.
Patients with recto-vestibular fistula (most common anore**al malformation in females) are frequently misdiagnosed as recto-va**nal fistula.

How do you know if the a**s is normal in a newborn?
The a**s should be located in the center of the sphincter. In girls there should some skin (perineal body) between the va**na and the a**s. A full term newborn should be able to accommodate a number 12 Hegar during clinical examination (awake, not under anesthesia). If in doubt, caliber it with a Hegar dilator.

Myth: The finding of no ganglion cells in a re**al biopsy equals Hirschsprung disease.

Reality: Human beings have a normal aganglionic zone near the a**s, therefore, a biopsy done too low may not find ganglion cells and that does not mean that the patient has Hirschsprung disease.
