THE STORY BEHIND BRIGHT SKYE ABA
(Long post)
No matter how much I understood autism from books or training, nothing prepares you for the moment it touches your family.
When it’s your niece. When it’s Skye.
Skye was always bubbly. She copied words, laughed easily, and connected with people around her. But as she approached her second birthday, something shifted.
Her eye contact faded.
She started repeating actions over and over.
She became quieter, more distant.
Signs I had studied before now staring me in the face.
I had an idea of what it was. But in our family, that idea was challenging to say out loud.
It was even more challenging to be accepted.
There was denial.
Not because of ignorance but because of fear.
Fear of what it meant. Fear of what came next.
And honestly, that’s something I see in so many families as we only start to understand conditions like autism when it’s someone close to us.
I still remember that long trip to Pampanga from Nueva Ecija just to see a developmental pediatrician.
We had to travel far. It was costly.
After that, therapy began.
I remember Skye sleeping through long car rides just to attend a 2-hour session.
Every week.
All that distance. All that effort.
For something many people in the city take for granted.
And then I thought..
What about the others?
What about the families who can’t afford those trips?
Who doesn’t even know what signs to look for?
Who is told “magsasalita rin ‘yan” or “hindi naman yan totoo, gawa-gawa lang ‘yan”?
What happens to the children who are missed—just because the proper support is too far, too expensive, or too unfamiliar?
That’s why I created Bright Skye ABA.
It’s more than just a name.
It’s Skye’s name. It’s her journey. It’s our family’s learning.
It’s the “B” for “Bright”, because we believe in every child’s potential.
It’s the “S” for Skye, whose light sparked this whole movement.
It’s the cloud, shaped like a brain, because behind every behavior is a child capable of learning.
And it’s the sun, rising behind that cloud, because even when things feel heavy or unclear, there’s always a way forward.
This isn’t just about autism.
This is for every child, with or without special needs.
This is for every parent who’s confused, every teacher who wants to help, and every family who is trying to understand.
Bright Skye ABA is a reminder:
Proper intervention shouldn’t be a privilege.
Awareness shouldn’t only come after diagnosis.
And help should never be out of reach.
So, if you’re a family still finding your way..
Know that I see you.
We’ve been there.
And this, this whole advocacy, exists because of stories like yours.
Because no matter how far you are, how unsure you feel, or how new this is to you, there’s always a Bright Skye waiting to break through.
