Epilepsy Awareness Day, is celebrated annually on March 26. Also known as PURPLE DAY. It was started in 2008 to increase the public’s understanding of epilepsy and to eliminate the fear and stigma surrounding it. Purple Day is an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide.
The main objectives of epilepsy awareness days are to increase education on epilepsy, dispel myths and misconceptions, reduce stigma and discrimination, and promote the rights of people with epilepsy.
In the Philippines, the first week of September each year is designated as "National Epilepsy Week" since 2002.
In 2015, the international community, led by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) and International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE), announced the creation of International Epilepsy Day on the second Monday of February each year.
Epilepsy awareness days fall into several categories: global epilepsy awareness days, epilepsy awareness months, regional epilepsy awareness weeks, and regional epilepsy awareness days and national epilepsy awareness days.
Awareness days promote the rights of People With Epilepsy (PWE) by giving them a voice and ensuring their representation in advocacy efforts. These events foster collaboration among stakeholders, including patients, professionals, and organizations, which helps address structural inequalities and improve public understanding of epilepsy. Additionally, a people-centric approach in planning these awareness days emphasizes social justice, ensuring that the needs of People With Epilepsy (PWE) and their families are recognized and met.
