Aahar-Vihar (diet & lifestyle) Principles from Vagbhata Sutra

Aahar-Vihar aligns with an individual's dosha (body constitution / prakriti), healthy habits, daily regimens and seasonal regimens that collectively influence well-being. It emphasizes harmonizing daily self-care habits with natural rhythms to support physical, mental, social and spiritual health. 6 Ayurvedic self-care principles from Vagbhata Sutra (Ashtanga Hridaya Sutra):

1) Bhojanante Visham Vaari - Drinking water at the end of a meal is akin to drinking poison. Avoid drinking water during meals, timing water intake around meals to avoid diluting digestive juices and spacing out water consumption around meals (e.g., not drinking it within 48-90 minutes before or after eating).
2) Drink water slowly by sipping
3) Avoid cold water, cold drink and cold food
4) Drink water on an empty stomach upon waking.
5) Eating freshly cooked, warm food (ushna ahara) is a foundational dietary principle for promoting strong digestion (agni), optimum health, strengthening immunity and longevity. Food should be consumed within approximately 48 minutes of cooking to best utilize its nutritional value.
6) You must chew your food well. Chew your food 32 times since you have 32 teeth.

What’s Panchakarma in Ayurveda?

Panchakarma is the ultimate mind-body healing and rejuvenation modality in Ayurveda. It comes from the Sanskrit word that means "five actions" or "five treatments". At the heart of a Panchakarma treatment are the five therapy procedures. These are called Vaman, Virechan, Basti, Nasya, and Raktamokshana. These terms stand for laxative measures, herbal enemas, vomiting therapies, nasal rinsing, and phlebotomy. The series of these five therapies help remove deep-rooted stress and illness-causing toxins from the body while balancing the doshas energies that govern all biological functions. It is recommended on a seasonal basis and when an individual feels out of balance or is experiencing illness.

Treat your body like a temple. Abhyanga, or daily self-massage with warm oil (commonly sesame), improves circulation, nourishes skin, strengthens muscles, and calms the nervous system. Regular practice reduces fatigue, improves sleep, and delays aging.

Take 10 minutes to massage your body before a warm bath—your mind and skin will thank you.
