👁️ Protect Your Sight, Know Your Risk! 👁️

Q: Why is glaucoma called the "silent thief of sight"?

A: Glaucoma is often termed the "silent thief of sight" because it typically progresses without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss occurs. It involves damage to the optic nerve, often due to increased eye pressure. Regular eye examinations are essential for early detection and management to prevent irreversible vision loss.

A PUBLIC ADVISORY FROM THE PHILIPPINE ACADEMY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY: Beware of unproven eye medicine, eye drops, and eye devices that are being peddled as a cure-all or prevention of different eye conditions. Consult your ophthalmologist for the proper care of your eyes.

5 FACTS ABOUT DIABETES AND YOUR EYES 🩸👁️

Diabetes can have significant impacts on eye health. Here are some key facts to be aware of:

1️⃣ Most major eye disease from diabetes takes about 5 to 10 years to develop. However, this doesn’t mean your vision is safe during those years.
2️⃣ People with diabetes are twice as likely to develop cataracts than other adults. High blood sugar levels lead to a build-up of cells and proteins in the eye’s lens, making it cloudy.
3️⃣ Women with diabetes who become pregnant are at high risk for diabetic retinopathy and vision loss.
4️⃣ Diabetes can cause eye muscle paralysis and double vision.
5️⃣ People with diabetes may be more likely to get eye infections. That's because uncontrolled diabetes hinders your immune system's ability to fight infections.

Consult your ophthalmologist for more information on how to manage diabetes and prevent its eye-related complications.
