The day was established to raise awareness of the discrimination faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals. It began in 2004, chosen to mark the day in 1990 when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. Observed annually on May 17, it aims to promote equal rights, raise awareness, and combat stigma and violence against LGBTQIA+ people worldwide.
