Many guidelines and societies advise against the routine prescribing of fluoroquinolones, like ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin, as first line for uncomplicated urinary tract infections 🙅‍♀️ ❌ because of a significant side effect profile, and because of a need to reserve these drugs for complicated or culture-proven cases.

This is even more important in vulnerable groups like children and the elderly!

For different reasons, parents or guardians of children with urologic problems may need to learn how to do clean, intermittent catheterizations (CICs) to drain urine from the bladder.

CICs are frequently started for children with problems emptying the bladder completely. This usually includes patients with spine problems affecting the bladder ("neurogenic bladder").

While this can sound scary for both children and parents, the journey doesn’t have to be scary at all! Catheters can actually help, and not hinder, children to live full and happy lives with independence and confidence. ☺️

Many Filipinos have their kids circumcised to “keep the p***s clean” and safe from infections. Does circumcision actually have a benefit in preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs) in boys? Should all boys get circumcised?

While circumcisions are “medically indicated” in some boys, such as those with inborn risk factors that make them more prone to UTIs, most healthy, normal boys will not get infections even if they do not get circumcised.

Parents, surgeons, pediatricians, and primary providers should NOT be ordering a routine ultrasound or imaging to diagnose an undescended te**is. Not all children with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) will have urinary tract infections (UTIs), and not all children with UTIs have VUR.

However, if your child is getting repeated urinary tract infections, especially with fever, they should be seen by a pediatric urologist. The pediatric urologist will assess for different causes of infections, which may include VUR. VUR can cause severe infections of the urinary tract which can affect kidney function in the long run.

Fortunately, most children older than five years old grow out of bedwetting without issues. However, children who can’t seem to have any dry nights or who have symptoms during the day as well; who have issues with snoring and poor sleep; and who are getting infections need to be evaluated by a pediatrician and a pediatric urologist.
