Feedback has an essential role in leadership.
We should welcome feedback rather than fear it because it helps us to level up.
Here are ways on how to give feedback effectively.
1. Start with positives
Create a new culture with your team by taking feedback positively. Start the meeting by thanking them for giving their time, share your latest wins, and appreciate the good they have done.
2. Make the feedback timely
There is a time and place for everything. Don’t embarrass the recipient by calling them out in front of other people to witness. Let them know in advance. Schedule a time and place for a meeting. Let them know what the meeting is for.
3. Give feedback in person
Wag magchismis sa ibang tao. Feedback should be given directly to the person. It doesn’t help you and it certainly doesn’t help the recipient if you involve other people (unless if you’re giving feedback to your whole team). If you can’t meet personally, schedule an online meeting (Hangout, Zoom, Messenger).
4. Respect the recipient’s other priorities
With giving feedback, it’s easy to forget that you are time bound. You want to share as much as possible. But you have to keep in mind na may plans din yung kausap mo. Kahit na kung wala siyang plans, make sure to be professional. Before giving them feedback, let them know how long the meeting will be (30 min-1 hour).
5. Refrain from multitasking
Kung may meeting kayo for feedback, focus on that. Keep your phones silent and away from reach. Your full attention should be with the person and nowhere else.
6. Be prepared
Tanungin mo sarili mo kung ano ang gusto mong iachieve from the discussion? Do you want to thank the other person or get them to change in some way? Plan out the points you want to talk about. Establish an action plan as well.
9. Follow up
Ask questions and listen to their own feedback. How did they internalize the feedback? What worked and what could work better for them?
