Recently, there has been an increasing trend of diagnosed individuals needing therapy. With the increase in demand, the practice has been more known to the public. Unfortunately, this has pushed some individuals to take advantage of this current trend in demand and more of the so called pseudo-professionals have popped up, raising concerns by clients/parents regarding the credibility of therapists as cost of therapy is not the cheapest. As well as because the supply of therapists/ slots do not match the demand for their services. So here's the deal:
1. Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Pathology are at least 4 year programs on select accredited institutions. A few months of training does not match the years of mastery from the foundational knowledge to hands on training that these individuals need.
2. It is required by law that all practicing professionals (Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech and Language Pathologists) are licensed by the Philippine Regulation Commission. All are required to take a grueling licensure examination before having the privilege of calling themselves professionals.
3. For sure, even those pseudo-professionals have good intentions, but it does not take away the difference in training. A license is not a magic card that makes someone a good therapist but a testament to the dedication and training the individual has undergone. It should give the clients/parents the confidence that they are getting the service that they deserve considering that therapy is not really the cheapest.
4. Always verify. You can even ask the clinic or the therapist of his/her credentials. For sure, they will be more than happy to show you any proof that would ease your concerns. It is part of establishing that rapport and trust that is needed for a successful therapy.
5. Three in one therapy is yet to exist, as each individual therapist has a different skillset necessary for a successful therapy. They set and target different goals that are at times prerequisites of one another. One individual can not do it all. It may seem like the cheaper alternative, but it is a different case. But at the end of the day it will always be a choice.
