Position Statement of the Philippine Nurses Association on the Recent Tragic Incident Involving a Nurse
The Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) profoundly mourns the tragic death of a nurse in a private hospital in Tagbilaran City. This incident, where a healthcare professional lost her life while fulfilling her duties, highlights the urgent need for increased protection and security for nurses and other healthcare workers in all healthcare facilities across the country.
Nurses serve on the frontlines of patient care, providing essential services critical to Filipino people's health and well-being. The role of nurses is not only physically and mentally demanding but also requires constant compassion, patience, and dedication. Any act of violence against a nurse is an attack on the very individuals who selflessly devote themselves to the care of others.
The PNA strongly condemns this violent act and emphasizes the importance of fostering a safe and supportive environment for nurses. We call on healthcare institutions, government agencies, and law enforcement to take immediate and concrete steps to ensure the safety of all healthcare professionals. This includes reinforcing security measures, implementing stricter policies against violence in healthcare settings, and raising awareness about the critical role that healthcare workers play in society.
We also urge healthcare facilities to support their staff in managing conflicts with patients or their families and to ensure that nurses are treated with respect and dignity in their workplace.
Our hearts go out to the family and colleagues of the nurse who lost her life, and we stand in solidarity with all healthcare workers who continue to face the risk of violence while serving their communities. The PNA remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for the welfare and safety of Filipino nurses, and we will continue to work towards ensuring that no nurse suffers such a fate again.
