INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL DAY 2025
Sorsogon Medical Mission Group Hospital and Health Services Cooperative celebrated its first Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Day, last July 22, 2025, in support of the annual National IPC Week, celebrated across the country.
Despite the inclement weather, the event was a success with attendees from the various departments and units of the Cooperative hospital, reflecting the importance of infection prevention and control among all personnel.
Warmly hosted by Nurses Jamee Siy and Allan Fortes, the event kicked off with participants and guests welcomed by IPCC Chairperson Dr. Christine Jane Hermo.
Keynote Speaker of the event was Development Officer IV and OIC of the Department of Health - Sorsogon, Ms. Maita Mortega, who highlighted the theme of this year's National IPC Week, “IPC Champions: Leading the Way to Safer Healthcare”. She reminded our participants that all healthcare workers are IPC Champions in their own, unique ways.
IPC Day would not be complete without expert discussions on the latest science and practices in infection prevention and control. The first session on techniques on improving hand hygiene compliance was discussed by Harold Duran, PhD, Nurse Supervisor and trained IPC Nurse from the Bicol Regional Hospital and Medical Center. His presentation focused on the multimodal strategies implemented by the BRHMC HIPCC to increase hand hygiene compliance that dramatically reduced rates of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) in the said medical center. This was followed by a discussion on care bundles or a set of evidenced-based practices, that when implemented together, reduces the risk of HAI among admitted patients, by Dr. Joan Bonaobra, Infectious Disease Specialist and IPC Chairperson of the Daraga Doctor’s Hospital. She also touched on the necessity of updated hospital antibiograms as a tool for healthcare providers in combating the threat of antimicrobial resistance in hospital environments.
Highlights of the IPC Day also included the presentation of the Hand Hygiene Champions Award and the announcement of winners of the IPC TikTok challenge, participated by various hospital units.
To solemnly affirm the Cooperative’s commitment for IPC, Dr. Hermo led the group in the Declaration and Signing of the Pledge of Commitment for IPC, which included hospital leaders, physicians, guests and participants.
IPC Day was formally closed with the remarks of Dr. Verdi Gamad, Medical Director, to which she thanked our guest speakers, participants, winners and the members of Infection Prevention and Control Committee, particularly Dr. Hermo, Ms. Karla Arimado, IPC Nurse, and the Nursing Service Office for spearheading the event.
Infection Prevention and Control Day 2025 went on to be a successful event, a celebration of accomplishments over the years and an affirmation of the role of all healthcare providers in ensuring safe, infection-free, quality care for our patients.
