The SPMC Neurosurgery OR Nursing Team participated in a one-day hands-on neurosurgical drill workshop this November 13, 2025 focusing on the setup, care, use, and maintenance of neurosurgical drills and the integrated power console—vital tools in the SPMC neurosurgery operating room.

The training was conducted by Mr. John Ezekiel Dela Cruz, a representative from Medtronic, who provided in-depth guidance on equipment handling, troubleshooting, and best practices.

This workshop strengthened the nurses’ technical competencies and confidence in managing the neurosurgical power systems, ensuring patient safety and procedural efficiency in every operation. The workshop was attended by the SPMC neurosurgery team nurses: Janelle Althea Ortega, Gabrielle Jovan Salazar, Kerry Joy Rosario, James Mangcal, Ivony Tajolosa, and Niño Lobaton.

A big thank you to Medtronic for the continued partnership and to our dedicated nursing staff for their enthusiasm and commitment to continuous learning and excellence in neurosurgical care.

The Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) Neurosurgery Training Program recently welcomed the Philippine Board of Neurological Surgery (PBNS) accreditation team on October 18, 2025, for its official accreditation visit.

The PBNS accreditation team which was headed by Dr. Jaime Rama Jr., with its members Dr. George Sy, and Dr. Steven Bacalian, graciously took time from their demanding professional schedules to assess the program’s training standards, facilities, and overall compliance with national neurosurgical education benchmarks.

The SPMC Neurosurgery Department extends its deepest gratitude to the PBNS accreditation team for their dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment in ensuring the highest standards of neurosurgical training in the Philippines.

The SPMC Neurosurgery represents the Philippines for the 3rd consecutive year at the 2025 European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) held in Vienna, Austria last October 5-9, 2025.

Dr. Joselv Albano, together with Dr. Jose Nicanor Del Rosario III, presented at the congress plenary their work on a new surgical approach for the repair of congenital frontoethmoidal meningoencephaloceles. This new approach aims to streamline the surgical, social, and economic costs of the procedure and overall outcomes of these cases. They also presented their other research on vertex epidural hematomas to improve surgical decision making and outcomes for this rare type of brain injury.

The EANS Congress is Europe’s largest neurosurgical gathering with attendees from all around the globe to discuss the latest innovations and discoveries in the field of Neurosurgery.

Our thrust for research is aimed at improving the quality of patient care and outcomes that we deliver for our patients at SPMC. As we continue our call to service, we have scheduled the next congenital surgical mission on the first quarter of 2026. The SPMC Neurosurgery’s chairman Dr. Jose Nicanor Del Rosario III is Singapore’s National University Hospital (NUH) International Faculty for the recently held 3-day Cadaveric Advanced Skull Base Masterclass last September 24-26, 2025 at the NUH’s Advanced Surgery Training Center. He specifically shared his expertise on the various orbitozygomatic variations as well as combined endoscopic and microscopic approaches to the skull base developed and adopted at SPMC.

He was joined by other faculty including Prof. Sebastien Froelich, Prof. James Rutka, Prof. Kong Doo-Sik, Prof. Hong Chang-Ki, and SPMC Neurosurgery training alumnus Dr. Keith Cheng (neuro-oncology fellow) among others.

Other members of the SPMC Neurosurgery team who joined Dr. Del Rosario were Dr. Joselv Albano and the training program coordinator Dr. Eric Paolo Palabyab as workshop participants.

The Southern Philippines Medical Center Neurosurgery recently concluded its 3-day Back Pain and Spine Neurosurgical Mission Week last August 18 to 20, 2025 catering to a variety of spinal pathologies including degenerative diseases and spinal tumors.

The SPMC Neurosurgery recently concluded the 1st Ivan J. Natividad Neurosurgical mission last February 3-6, 2025 in honor of the late Dr. Ivan Natividad who helped shape SPMC Neurosurgery. The 4-day event catered to 12 patients primarily for congenital pediatric craniofacial reconstructive surgeries as well as some brain and spine tumor cases.

We would like to thank the support of the SPMC Department of Anesthesiology, nursing staff, nurse attendants, and sponsors for making this mission a success.

Dr. Joselv Albano and Dr. Jose Nicanor Del Rosario III presented another paper on the “Single-center Experience and Retrospective Validation of the ETV versus CCHU Success Scores for Pediatric Hydrocephalus in the Southern Philippines” at the International Federation of Neuroendoscopy (IFNE) conference held last December 6-8, 2024 at Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Their work aims to streamline candidate selection for endoscopic third ventriculostomy with or without choroid plexus extirpation for pediatric hydrocephalus catered at SPMC. The IFNE is the largest internationally-recognized neurosurgical organization solely dedicated for the education, research, and promotion of neuroendoscopy.

The SPMC Neurosurgery, represented by Dr. Joselv Albano, presented their paper co-authored with Dr. Nicanor del Rosario III on “A Rigid Endoscopic Approach to Choroid Plexectomy as an Adjunct to Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy and Choroid Plexus Coagulation” at the 24th European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) Congress . The EANS is Europe’s largest neurosurgical congress and was held at the National Palace of Culture, Sofia, Bulgaria last October 13-17, 2024. The paper aims to broaden the available treatment options for pediatric patients with hydrocephalus.

The SPMC Neurosurgery recently concluded their 5-day in-house surgical mission at the SPMC Main OR Complex from June 24-28, 2024. The mission catered to rare and complex neurosurgical cases performed by the trainees under the guidance of their expert consultants. This neurosurgical mission attests to the commitment of SPMC Neurosurgery to providing accessible, affordable, and high quality neurosurgical care to the people of Mindanao. In attendance were the consultants: Dr. Silvestre Gonzales (Chairman), Dr. Nicanor del Rosario III (Training Officer), Dr. Russel Sasing, and Dr. Ivan Natividad, and the trainees: Dr. Joselv Albano and Dr. Dominique Louise Aniñon.
