𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝑶𝑩-𝑮𝒀𝑵? 𝑰𝒔𝒏'𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂 𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒅 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒘𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏?🤔🇵🇭

It’s a question I get asked a lot—sometimes with genuine curiosity, sometimes with a bit of a raised eyebrow. Let’s face it: here in the Philippines, Obstetrics and Gynecology is overwhelmingly dominated by brilliant female physicians. Add to that our deeply conservative culture, and it’s easy to see why a male OB-GYN is still seen by many as a rarity.
So, why did I choose this path?

The truth is, choosing OB-GYN was never about gender; it was about the profound impact of the work.

𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙖 𝙙𝙪𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙜𝙚: In what other field do you get to guide a mother through one of the most vulnerable, high-stakes journeys of her life, and a split second later, welcome a brand-new miracle into the world?

𝘼𝙙𝙫𝙤𝙘𝙖𝙘𝙮 𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙚: From routine prenatal checks to managing complex, high-risk pregnancies, women's healthcare demands utmost precision, empathy, and advocacy. Being a male doctor in this space means working twice as hard to break barriers, build trust, and ensure my patients feel completely safe, heard, and respected.

𝙍𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙣𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚: Respect and professional excellence have no gender. Every day in the clinic and the delivery room, my goal is to prove that comfort comes from competence, compassion, and unwavering dedication to patient safety.

To all the moms, future moms, and families who have trusted me with their care and their miracles—thank you. You are the reason I chose this field, and the reason I love what I do every single day. 🩺❤️

To my fellow male MDs considering this path, or anyone doubting their choice because of "norms": if the passion is there, break the mold. The medical field needs heart, regardless of gender.

Imagine a world where your patient hasn’t even taken their first breath yet. A world where surgery happens inside the womb, correcting a life-threatening condition before birth.

Recently, I had the profound honor of being part of the incredible medical team that performed a 𝐅𝐞𝐭𝐨𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 — a highly specialized, cutting-edge fetal surgery.

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝑻𝒘𝒊𝒏-𝒕𝒐-𝑻𝒘𝒊𝒏 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒇𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝒚𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒆 (𝑻𝑻𝑻𝑺)?🤔

To understand why this procedure is nothing short of a miracle, you have to understand the silent battle some identical twins face in the womb.

In Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), identical twins share a single placenta, but the blood vessels connecting them are uneven.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫" 𝐓𝐰𝐢𝐧: Pumps blood to the other twin, leaving themselves with too little blood, poor growth, and low amniotic fluid.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭" 𝐓𝐰𝐢𝐧: Receives too much blood, overloading their tiny heart and causing a dangerous excess of fluid.

Without intervention, this condition is devastating and highly fatal for both babies. It is a literal race against time.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝑳𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒓 𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒆​ ⚡🩺

That’s where our team stepped in. Using a tiny camera called a fetoscope, the surgeons entered the womb, mapped out the abnormal connecting blood vessels on the placenta, and used a precise laser to seal them off.

By separating their blood supplies, we gave both babies their own independent chance to grow, thrive, and survive.

An advanced procedure like this requires an absolute symphony of precision, calm under pressure, and seamless collaboration. From the maternal-fetal medicine specialists and surgeons to the anesthesiologists, nurses, and tech support, every single person in that operating room played a vital role in protecting these two tiny lives.

Standing alongside these brilliant minds was a humbling reminder of why I chose medicine. Science is amazing, but being part of a team that helps rewrite a family’s future? That is pure magic.

Back for baby #2!

Mommy visited me, together with her hubby and the baby I delivered almost 3 years ago.

Back then, wala pa akong nabigay na token for babies I deliver, kaya naman kahit almost 3 years late, inabot ko ang JCM bear. Sakto kasi she has the same stuffed toy! Premonition kaya ito for a baby boy? 🤔🤭😅
