Double cord coil 🫣🫣🫣

Our featured patient went into spontaneous labor and was admitted right away. She wanted to stay in the room, but I always monitor my patients in the labor room hooked to a fetal monitor. During the course of labor, the baby’s heart rate was as high as 180s. I tried resuscitating the baby while observing if it was going to improve. Persistent tachycardia and loss of variability ensued. Vaginal delivery was far from reality. I decided to deliver via C-section. Lo and behold, there were two tight nuchal cord coils 🥺🥺🥺

Labor can be very tumultuous. It requires close attention not just to the mother, but most specially the baby. Certain patterns in the baby’s heart rate are sometimes cry for help. No one knows what could have happened if we were late in intervening.

Thankfully, baby had a good cry, and remained stable. She went home along with her happy mom and grandparents on the second day of life.

Mommy in her 40s.

She had her 1st pregnancy 19 years ago, who sadly passed away at 3 years old. When she thought all hope was lost at becoming a mother, she got pregnant at 41. At this age, she was already taking her maintenance medication for hypertension.

Thankfully, we did not have any complications related to her hypertension. It was managed well during the entire pregnancy with medications and regular follow-up.

After 16 hours of gruelling labor, she delivered to a healthy 3.4kg baby by normal spontaneous birth. She went home with her baby the following day.
