Proper Cataract Evaluation Before Surgery

Cataract surgery can greatly improve vision, but proper evaluation is crucial. Here’s why:

Why Proper Screening Matters:
- Identify Underlying Conditions: Detect issues like glaucoma or macular degeneration that could affect surgery.
- Ensure Surgical Suitability: Assess the type and severity of cataracts to confirm surgery is appropriate.

Importance of Cardiac and Pulmonary Clearance:
- Preoperative Assessment: Evaluating heart and lung function minimizes surgical risks, especially for those with existing conditions.

Role of Biometry:
- Accurate Lens Selection: Precision measurements ensure that the right intraocular lens (IOL) is chosen for optimal vision.
- Customized Treatment: Tailored plans cater to individual eye anatomy for better outcomes.

Our Commitment to Safety and Precision:
We prioritize your safety and aim for the best surgical results. A thorough evaluation can significantly enhance the success of cataract surgery.

**MYTH:** All patients diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy automatically require panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) treatment.

**FACT:** Not everyone with diabetic retinopathy needs PRP. Treatment plans vary based on the severity of the condition. Early stages may just need regular monitoring and lifestyle changes, while advanced cases may indeed require PRP to prevent vision loss.

Always consult your eye care specialist to determine the best approach for your unique situation.

Neovascular Glaucoma

At Surigao Medical Center Eye and Laser Institute, your eye health is our priority! Today, we’re focusing on a serious condition known as **neovascular glaucoma**.

What is Neovascular Glaucoma?
Neovascular glaucoma occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow on the iris and block the drainage angle of the eye, leading to increased intraocular pressure (IOP) and potential vision loss.

Treatment Options:
Managing neovascular glaucoma is crucial for preserving vision. Here are some effective treatment options:

1. Medications: Eye drops and oral medications can help lower intraocular pressure.

2. Laser Therapy Procedures like pan-retinal photocoagulation can reduce the abnormal blood vessel growth, improving drainage and lowering IOP.

3. Surgery: In advanced cases, surgical interventions such as glaucoma drainage devices may be necessary to create a new pathway for fluid to escape.

If you notice any symptoms or have risk factors such as diabetes or previous eye injuries, please reach out for a thorough examination!

A 62-year-old patient recently consulted one of our doctors, reporting blurred vision, floaters, and scotoma (a dark spot) in her lower field of vision for the past few weeks. Upon examination, she was diagnosed with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

What is Retinal Detachment?
Retinal detachment occurs when the retina separates from its normal position. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent blindness.

Common Symptoms of Retinal Detachment:

Sudden appearance of floaters or black spots.
Flashes of light in your vision.
A shadow or “curtain” covering part of your visual field.
Blurred or distorted vision.

Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preserving your vision. If you experience any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with our eye specialists immediately.

Do you have a raised, fleshy growth on the white part of your eye? It might not just be a harmless pterygium. It could be conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma, a type of eye cancer that often gets misdiagnosed. Don't ignore any unusual growths on your eyes - consult with an ophthalmologist and get a proper diagnosis.

Early detection is key in treating this type of cancer.

A patient presented with complaints of black spots in his vision. Upon examination of the retina, a retinal tear was identified in the periphery. If left untreated, this could have led to rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, resulting in blurred vision. Timely barrier laser treatment, or barrier retinopexy, was performed to prevent progression to retinal detachment.

The advantages of timely barrier laser treatment include:

1. Prevention of Detachment: It effectively reduces the risk of the retinal tear progressing to a detachment.
2. Preservation of Vision: By executing the procedure early, it helps maintain better visual acuity.
3. Minimized Surgery Risk: It decreases the likelihood of needing more invasive surgical interventions later.
4. Quick Recovery: Patients can typically recover faster and return to their normal activities sooner.
5. Less Complications: Early treatment minimizes potential complications associated with retinal detachment.
