Neovascular Glaucoma

At Surigao Medical Center Eye and Laser Institute, your eye health is our priority! Today, we’re focusing on a serious condition known as **neovascular glaucoma**.

What is Neovascular Glaucoma?
Neovascular glaucoma occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow on the iris and block the drainage angle of the eye, leading to increased intraocular pressure (IOP) and potential vision loss.

Treatment Options:
Managing neovascular glaucoma is crucial for preserving vision. Here are some effective treatment options:

1. Medications: Eye drops and oral medications can help lower intraocular pressure.

2. Laser Therapy Procedures like pan-retinal photocoagulation can reduce the abnormal blood vessel growth, improving drainage and lowering IOP.

3. Surgery: In advanced cases, surgical interventions such as glaucoma drainage devices may be necessary to create a new pathway for fluid to escape.

A 62-year-old patient recently consulted one of our doctors, reporting blurred vision, floaters, and scotoma (a dark spot) in her lower field of vision for the past few weeks. Upon examination, she was diagnosed with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

What is Retinal Detachment?
Retinal detachment occurs when the retina separates from its normal position. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent blindness.

Common Symptoms of Retinal Detachment:

Sudden appearance of floaters or black spots.
Flashes of light in your vision.
A shadow or “curtain” covering part of your visual field.
Blurred or distorted vision.

A patient presented with complaints of black spots in his vision. Upon examination of the retina, a retinal tear was identified in the periphery. If left untreated, this could have led to rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, resulting in blurred vision. Timely barrier laser treatment, or barrier retinopexy, was performed to prevent progression to retinal detachment.

The advantages of timely barrier laser treatment include:

1. Prevention of Detachment: It effectively reduces the risk of the retinal tear progressing to a detachment.
2. Preservation of Vision: By executing the procedure early, it helps maintain better visual acuity.
